Mrs.J
Hello, hole over Loudoun (and MoCo). Yep that is the hole I am in also. Not even 8 miles to my N there is some flurry action...
WVclimo
Just any radar echo is enough. I think I'm under the lightest color their is with very light snow. Nice. I am on the edge of the returns. Only thing falling from the sky here is moonlight.

I am in the hole indicated on radar, and I can confirm that it is not snowing here...but if it is snowing in Fair Oaks, it should not be long here (hopefully)! Well "technically" the snow hole on radar is false. Think about how the radar pulse gets higher the farther it gets from the radar site. Therefore, it is sampling a higher level of the atmosphere as it gets farther (hence the hole). It might "seem" accurate at times but technically it is a myth. I'm pretty sure he wasn't arguing the existence of "snow holes", only the fact that some radars show the illusion of "snow holes".

I think in reality though it is more of a horizontal lack of precip than a "hole" - But yes, point understood. But it is a myth. Often times people will report not having snow until they've been under returns for hours. Not the case here, though. Every case is a bit different. I think any locales proximity to the radar beam plays a part on the capability or accuracy of the radar for that location. I don't think the beam sweeps the same amount of vertical distance of two locations that are a different distance from the beam. The beam's cross section, I think, is really a triangle, with the smallest angle at the origin of the beam. But maybe not. Edit: And if you were confused before, I'm certain this post clears it up. More whisky.
