Natester
I see little to no accumulation on trees or power lines but the roads are SLICK.
metalicwx366
the current radar image is a true microcosm of how this winter has gone......chicago sitting in a hole. Yeah twc just showed the big donut hole over the entire Chicago area. It was crazy to look at.

Chitown Storm
Dry air wins again! seriously.....the radar returns haven't moved any closer to Chicago in the last few hours. It skipped right over us. I realize the precip isn't reaching the ground anywhere yet, but still. This is comical...

cyclone77
FWIW that donut hole was over DVN as well, dry air is region wide and will take awhile to saturate to get this event to begin. Still dry here. Narrow band of precip finally made it into QC, but is slowly shrinking as it heads this way. Late arrival and relatively light precip should make for a very light glazing event here before we change to all rain by 2-3pm. Sitting at 29 currently. Harry Perry
I'm in awe over that graphic with dry air over LOT and DVN... Getting a little pathetic at this point. I'm still optimistic for many having close to a quarter inch of ice. The cold air is holding its own so far.

I'm still optimistic for many having close to a quarter inch of ice. The cold air is holding its own so far. MI/WI have better chances, we had a weak impulse move by overnight that helped saturate most of the column, you can see it on the GRB 12z sounding. DTX's as well though though from 700-850mb there is dry air, although the weak impulse is still in the area saturating the atmosphere.
Chitown Storm
how long until LOT updates its discussion? I already know what they're going to say. "Dry air really hanging on longer than anticipated. Getting concerned that that warm air will make it to surface shortly after precip starts. Will consider cancelling Advisory with next update." Already looking forward to possible severe storms on Tuesday.....
cyclone77
Absolutely HUGE snowflakes falling right now. Just isolated blobs of snow about the size of cotton balls.

Funny how virga does that on radar...and it does seem like we've seen that a lot this winter, the column slow to saturate.
snowstormcanuck
What a disaster the morning commute is going to be per the 12z NAM. Over a quarter inch of ice right during rush hour, on top of 2" of snow. RGEM is much colder though, indicating most of the pcpn will fall as snow before a brief period of ZR. GFS is bone dry and mostly a non-event. So little intra and inter model consistency it's hard to come up with a forecast.

Chitown Storm
after complaining about being stuck in the radar hole all morning, I just walked outside and the sleet/ice pellets have begun in Aurora. Interesting.
snowstormcanuck
Chi-town thumping (well, thumping relative to this turd winter) on the 12z GFS on the backside of the storm.

Natester
I would say that there is about a tenth of an inch of ice on power lines and tree branches. Roads and sidewalks however are completely covered in ice.

cyclone77
Been dry here the last half hour or so. Precip really fighting the dry air. The time below freezing is continuing to tick away.
Stebo
Figures, the RAP shows a TRACE of freezing rain while the GFS and NAM show an appreciable amount of QPF RAP also says it should be above freezing in Chicago in an hour, I think that is going to bust hard. hawkeye_wx
There is a layer of ice on everything, but not very thick. The rain has picked up, but now it is pooling as liquid on the pavement and not instantly freezing like earlier.
turtlehurricane
Light snow has commenced in Madison, there might be a little sleet but it's mostly small snowflakes. Currently 27 F.
