J.Mike
Here's on primer with pretty pictures but it doesn't identify them well. http://www.its.caltech.edu/~atomic/snowcrystals/photos2/photos2.htm Here's a gallery that identified crystal types but you have to search through to find the type you want. http://bentley.sciencebuff.org/classification.asp?ClassificationCode=P2d This is my favorite, you can pretty well identify types by just looking at them. The ones with all the branches and fillagrees are dendrites, the ones that look like different types of plates are plates. Columns are pretty self explanatory. Thx to all who responded. Great pics BTW.
zgummy
The last remarkable snow event on everybody's minds is the Jan '11 commuter cluster, so I imagine orgs are looking for any means possible to avoid finger-pointing if there's a repeat. It’s true, Northern Virginians can’t drive in the snow

WxMan1
Wes, Ha...I was thinking the same thing. Quite honestly, I'm not sure. I know those graphics are produced internally at HPC, and I know those updated SLR grids make it to the WFOs via GFE. But I never explored the availability of the Roebber output online since they're available while working. It doesn't help me when I'm home...lol! There are newer, alternate graphics as well, at least with the NAM. Specifically, a 'modified' NAM Roebber based on percentage of riming (riming according to the NAM that is). Of course, that would not apply today with it being as cold.. Brian, Is there any place on the web where you can get the Roebber SLRs? I like 14 or 14-1. Having the roebber SLRs would be a great check for when I'm winging it on ratios.

mitchnick
was there supposed to be a lot of zr down in KY and TN? I like that because it means more warm air streaming north into our cold dome or maybe it's just so light, idk
CranberryWX
LOL...Looking at radar returns it looks like it is going to be over in my neck of the woods just as it's getting started...big gap in KY heading east.

TradeWinds
For everyone saying about how the schools shouldn't let out early - schools are proactive ever since commutageddon and also because an inch of snow around here creates havoc. Also, the snow will stick right away... and usually the school systems check with meteorologists before announcing I can't agree with that. It only creates havoc because of the panic effect, which I've come to realize people in this area thrive off of. 1 inch should never cause a disaster. Roads are already treated, we have plows/salt trucks unlike southern cities. If you can sweep snow with a broom, nothing should be shut down. 87storms
you can see the area of enhancement/lift sagging south as the ns vort approaches. as that approaches, i'm assuming is when our action starts... http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=PBZ&product=N0R&overlay=11101111&loop=yes

Sheesh, they didn't even open out here today. Just incredible. Nearly nothing left of yesterday's snow (at least in town) once the sun and wind got finished with it. Couldn't believe it when the wife said she was off work today.

All it takes is one kid to get hurt due to some reason at all attributable to bad weather for the school to get slapped with a huge lawsuit. 87storms
the trajectory of the precip is definitely west to east right now or even a little south of east. this was kind of what i expected and not a huge fan of for us lower elevation crew, but hopefully as that vort approaches we get some added lift in our area.
