nw baltimore wx
MCPS 2 1/2 hour early. What a crock. For one inch. Were you on the roads yesterday morning? I wouldn't criticize systems for closing when their main concern is getting kids home in a timely manner. I'm only surprised they didn't make the announcement before schools started so schools and parents could have planned their day better.
Disc
It can't snow when the temp / dp spread is that big. Pics or it didn't happen. It's since slowed to barely anything now, but my eyes were telling the truth!

I speak as a commuting parent of an MCPS elementary schooler. And I say - keep the brats in school all day!

The exception is before huge historic storms when it's obvious it will be crippling. MoCo always waits until like 10/10:30ish to announce.

usedtobe
GFS is a marked improvement...esp for northern burbs I was going to say that. Looks like dca is right on the edge of .10 and I am too. Given that most of the snow will fall in 3 hours, we'll have some reduced visibilities and decent snow rates.
midatlanticweather
Nice returns showing on nexrad down by cho. prob flurries in the air. Decent trajectory. I don't think the snowhole is going to verify this time. It will find a way! It will! Someone is gonna get missed... and there will be crying and gnashing of teeth! clueless
I have not been notified of LoCo closing! It doesn't matter to me, but this leaves parents scrambling. The forecast is for light snow and the roads have been heavily treated. What's up with this call?

Yeah, with the very cold temps we have had this week, even an inch of snow could be troublesome on roads.
ravensrule
It's looked good all morning considering how tiny this event is. An encouraging sign on nam sim is that the entire area gets under decent rates for a time. Not some swiss cheese looking precip pattern. A decent shield for a couple hours. Obs are gonna pile up like ravens fan's tears next weekend. This analysis is poor.

usedtobe
Examples of each type would be helpful. Here's on primer with pretty pictures but it doesn't identify them well. http://www.its.caltech.edu/~atomic/snowcrystals/photos2/photos2.htm Here's a gallery that identified crystal types but you have to search through to find the type you want. http://bentley.sciencebuff.org/classification.asp?ClassificationCode=P2d This is my favorite, you can pretty well identify types by just looking at them. The ones with all the branches and fillagrees are dendrites, the ones that look like different types of plates are plates. Columns are pretty self explanatory. usedtobe
Excellent analysis, Wes! I haven't been at work since Wed, but even then I noticed the Roebber SLRs were closer to 14-15 to 1 vs. 20-1. That's still around 1.5-2 inches if the QPF breaks right, which would be slightly more than what I had the other day here in south AA County (1" on the nose in Crofton). Brian, Is there any place on the web where you can get the Roebber SLRs? I like 14 or 14-1. Having the roebber SLRs would be a great check for when I'm winging it on ratios. TradeWinds
MCPS 2 1/2 hour early. What a crock. For one inch. Agree. This area is sad how it panics over an inch. It must be a law that it's illegal for a school to hold a full week (5 straight days) of classes in the state of Maryland.
CranberryWX
It can't snow when the temp / dp spread is that big. Pics or it didn't happen. Started snowing here about an hour ago when the DP was 11...cur 21/16. Roads covered up quickly and slick. Now precip is more ice pellets than snow. yoda
For everyone saying about how the schools shouldn't let out early - schools are proactive ever since commutageddon and also because an inch of snow around here creates havoc. Also, the snow will stick right away... and usually the school systems check with meteorologists before announcing
Kmlwx
http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/sterling-va/weather-radar-r1h?play=1 DC Forcefield is in full effect. Again...just like we discussed the other night - this is a radar illusion caused by the elevation of the radar beam/pulse. There isn't actually a hole like that over DC right now. Bob Chill
http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/sterling-va/weather-radar-r1h?play=1 DC Forcefield is in full effect. Much of that has to do with proximity to the radar beam. Just switch to ric or dover and there are 25dbz returns over areas near dc. Edit: Ninja'd by kenny! lol
