famartin
Lol. Oh Steve d. Never change please. After Williams post, the 1980's did not seem that bad. Why all the crying? For me in Ewing, the worst years were 87-88 through 91-92. Average total of 14.1". Biggest snowstorm in that period was 7.2". Snowiest season was 18.9". famartin
If you watch KDIX (0.5 degree or composite) and KDOX, you'll notice that although there is a surge of echoes moving up the coast, the back edge continues to advance eastward toward the coast. A rather epic fail of the EC in the short term. Maybe NYC can get some flurries from the vort max currently moving into western PA.
WeatherFox
There should be a weather weeny warning for exercising caution when straining your eyes and looking at the light pole hoping to see some snowflakes falling from the sky.
Mitchel Volk
Except for 1983 when we had a great blizzard most of the winters were boring or frustrating during the 1980's. There was a couple of winters when DCA keep getting snowstorm after snowstorm and NYC get little or nothing. And even after the1983 storm it quickly when up to the 60's. Guest Pamela
The 80s just lacked big storms overall, 83 and 87 were the biggest ones though eastern LI did have some bigger ones like 2/25/90 and the 12/88 event. No question though looking at the Westbury/BNL Data they did alot better than Central Park in the 80s or the guy measuring at Central Park back then was even worse than the one today and I think it was actually NWS employees measuring back then so unlikely. Westbury actually mised some of the best ones...3.7 inches on 12/13/1988...but that one put down 11 - 12 inches around Islip. And the 1990 one in February was 14" + out east...a Norlun trough...often confused with the Feb 1999 one which was a regular big low off the coast...14 inches Montauk and 2 feet for the Cape. PB GFI
I think the spotter meant that it was all rain down there so far. Its been raining in Georgetown and 39 degrees. He is east of there, in Lewes. Yeh. Just read his quote not a flake.

green tube
There must have been a ton of LI snow events that were not NYC storms in the 80s...those 2 storms in 1/88 seem to equal NYC's entire total for the 87-88 winter. here are my own records from middlesex county NJ... side by side with william's numbers.... very similar. Westbury Annual Snowfall:............middlesex county 1980-81: 22.7"...............................20.0" 1981-82: 27.5"...............................25.5" 1982-83: 31.4"...............................33.0" 1983-84: 30.4"...............................32.7" 1984-85: 28.8"...............................26.0" 1985-86: 16.5"...............................21.7" 1986-87: 33.4"...............................41.5" 1987-88: 24.4"...............................22.8" 1988-89: 15.8"...............................10.2" 1989-90: 23.5"...............................16.0"

I thought so at first, but then I did a little research and it turns out that Quebec City averages about 125" snow per winter. Therefore, DC is somewhat less snowy than Quebec despite the rockin 80s. However, McLean, VA may be snowier than Quebec.

green tube
I would trade this winter or last winter for any of the above . the 80s lacked big individual events, otherwise it was colder and less volatile than post 2000 years.
NorthShoreWx
Yet, I'd take the last 10 years, including last year and this over the 80s, as long as we are talking about snow and not hair.

Isotherm
the 80s lacked big individual events, otherwise it was colder and less volatile than post 2000 years. We had a big one Feb 83 and then one in late Jan 87 and Feb as well I believe. Monmouth County approached 55"+ in the winter of 86-87. Overall the 80s were slightly snowier than both the 70s and the 90s in CNJ (based off of New Brunwick data).
