snowstormcanuck
Heavy snow band at McCowan and Steeles for the past half hour. Once insolation ceases and the snow becomes less cellular, I think that northerly band affecting you may become the dominant one. It'll sink south though later this evening. Jonger
Have not had the best luck in Howell.... Seems that a dominate band over Genesee has robbed us.

snowstormcanuck
1.9" fell with the main band here, on top of the 0.4" appetizer early this morning. 2.3" total thus far. Sun is out and shining now though. Could get some top up stuff later this evening.

frostfern
I'm thinking I might get a half decent snowfall out ahead of the Saturday clipper. Fairly long period of WSW flow off the lake.

Temperature are even cooler and that northerly band looks pretty strong; with snow already on many surfaces, accumulations should look good. We just need some luck that it'll stick around for some time..

But the wx is unpredictable and LES even more so. So stay hopeful.

Looks like you got a bit more time under the band. If you look at Exeter radar though you can already see a subtle sinking to the south so don't expect to get buried. michsnowfreak
Another I-94 band ftw this morning! Some of the best lake effect snow you will ever see in these parts. Snowfall through 6pm here is 1.9". 1.5" of that came in less than an hour and a half this morning in that whiteout squall that caused a 50-car pileup on I-75. Because of the blowing and drifting you see the grass tips in many places but also have drifts and some fresh plow piles. Took these pics this morning. Lake effect band appears it will reorganize and shifts south again tonight. Hope so!

Looks like this is the day when those of us who traditionally don't get a lot of lake effect are seeing a fair bit! Went for a walk in my local park late this afternoon and it was intense! michsnowfreak
Massive pileup in Detroit shut down I-75 for 7 hours and 3 are dead (2 kids). Aerial footage of the accident in this link. Its the unfortunate side to these whiteout squalls. Drivers describe it as a total whiteout, so even though traffic was only moving at 30 mph sounds like the complete 0 visibility is to blame for the crash http://www.freep.com/article/20130131/NEWS01/130131036/Multi-vehicle-accident-shuts-down-SB-I-75-near-Springwells?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE http://www.detroitnews.com/videonetwork/2132685976001 http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130131/METRO/301310434/Windsor-boy-7-girl-9-killed-75-crash-southbound-lanes-reopen?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE

snowstormcanuck
Snow squall watch upgraded to snow squall warning for the GTA 10 minutes ago. Not quite sure why It's for the band currently affecting the north end. Amounts certainly will not reach warning criteria but they seem to be issuing these warnings for snowsqualls in the Quebec sense: a brief period of very heavy snowfall with visibilities reduced to less that a few hundred metres. Ottawa Blizzard
Snow seems to be tapering off here. Looks like the band is moving south. EC seems to think we could see more squalls tomorrow. Any merit to this?
OntarioWX
Yeah, EC will sometimes hand out Snow Squall Warnings more for the sudden reduced visibility rather than the actual snow amounts. It's a good way to let people know that there can be whiteout conditions on the roads even if it doesn't snow more than a few cm's. I remember a front that rolled through southern ON in January 2012 that was more or less a 30 min period of heavy snow and EC issued widespread Snow Squall Warnings, though it had nothing to do with lake-effect and only dumped 4-6cm of actual snow.
