wisconsinwx
we had 2 events over 3" Nope, not according to my measurements. The first one (December 20) it's possible, but I'm not buying the second one.
BowMeHunter
Lolz, that screwhole doesn't make sense. Surface and 850 temps are below 0C and with lake temps down compared to when we saw our last snow, and the snow occurring in the early morning hours, this screwhole is not feasible imo. wisconsinwx
i don't care about your measurements. Well, when have the airport measurements ever been reliable? They're probably so desperate for snow that they weenie the amounts this year.

wisconsinwx
when have they ever be slant sticked like yours? Like that 99.9" season measurement they enjoyed tantalizing you with. No slant sticking here, that's probably why they are lower than the airports' recently.

wisconsinwx
you didn't even go outside during ghd blizzard. Like you really went out and measured any snow this yr. Since I shoveled the heavy wet snow we got with the Dec. 20 storm, why wouldn't I measure it? Also, something's not right when you measure 3.1" of snow out of 0.06" QPF. 50:1 ratios? Not buying it. Edit: I'm referring to the airport's measurement of the Dec. 29 snowfall.

michsnowfreak
Well, when have the airport measurements ever been reliable? They're probably so desperate for snow that they weenie the amounts this year. If it was discovered that a first-order climate station was deliberately low-balling or slant-sticking snowfall measurements the observers would probably be fired on the spot. There have always been snowy and not snowy winters, and airport observers certainly havent always been the best, but I dont think any of them (at least I HOPE any of them) don't inflate or lowball to fit an agenda lol. Its their job to measure whats on the snowboard (or in a windier snow, best estimate of snowfall). For instance....say ORD area gets around an inch of snow Sunday. If its 0.9" at the obs site, I would hope the observer (likely well aware of the record at stake) would report 0.9", and not fluff it up to 1.0-1.1" to avoid the record. Likewise, if its like 1.1" and the observer WANTS the record broken, I would hope they dont lowball it to 0.8-0.9".
BowMeHunter
the only time I trust the milwaukee airports snow measurements is if its not windy and that is almost never in decent events.

Its probably even harder to measure at the airport in windy events. I wont disagree that measurments can be off...I was just saying I doubt it would be done diliberately. This will be my last comment on the subject, the reason I brought up the airports' measurements is because they measured 3.0" and 3.1" in the two main events this year, and I still claim that we have not had a 3" event this year because those totals are too close to give me much confidence they actually did reach 3" in those events. wisconsinwx
The GEM supports a 0z Euro-like solution, three straight 3 hr periods of 1-2.5mm QPF, which probably translates to a total of 6-7mm, between 0.2 and 0.25" QPF.
wisconsinwx
The GEM and probably UKMET tell ORD your futility streak is over. Its precip type maps show a wider swath of snow than most, from Chicago north should be mostly snow. Could be skewed cold, who knows?
