ohleary
NCEP doesn't disseminate grib1 anymore...well to the general public. You can get the grib2 and convert to grib1 using "cnvgrib": http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/codes/GRIB2/ You'll need cnvgrib, g2lib, w3lib and jasper as well. wxmanmitch
I need a source for GFS in Grib 1. I can only find Grib 2. thanks. Why do you need the GFS in grib 1 format? If you're trying to plot the data, programs like GEMPAK or GrADS can handle the grib 2 data fine.
jgf
actually, one of the things i want is the documentation - specifically, the output fields and their names kind of like this one for grib 2 gfs: http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/products/gfs/gfs.t00z.pgrb2f06.shtml would we expect that they would be identical? jgf
Saildocs - it's an automated email-based grib retrieval service for sailors On sailboats, we typically have very low bandwidth - an Iridium sat phone used as a modem is only 2.4kb/sec, and can't download gribs directly from noaa. You send an email to saildocs, specifying what model you want, the geographic bounds, the forecast hours, what parameters you want, and what resolution you want. it will send the grib to you by return email in a few seconds. Typically, at sea, I am getting wind and pressure forecasts out a few days, that are under 100kb. Most marine navigation programs have built-in grib viewers now, so the forecasts are displayed over the charts, with the boat position and the route being navigated. To make things easier, in many navigation programs, you can just draw a box around the area you want, and the program will get the grib from saildocs automatically. Some of these navigation programs do not yet support Grib 2, so the service is converting them to grib 1.

GRIB2 is compressed much better and file sizes are much smaller...better all around.
jgf
My primary navigation program does display grib 2, but I don't have a convenient way to get them at sea.
