weathafella
I still love the January 1961 lows at BDL. 1/21 -13 1/22 -26 1/23 -19 1/24 -19 That was a incredible stretch that I have a vivid memory of as a 14 year old. We stepped down after the ridiculous torch of 12/4/60. The day I went to the giants/cowboys game in near 70 temps. The week was above normal. It much closer and then Saturday was normal. Few saw Sundays frigid conditions coming nor the historic blizzard that followed. However, the pattern relaxed after the blizzard for several weeks. Things started to get better in the first week of January with a 5 inch rain to snow system. Then it was back and forth but cold was winning more and more. Finally the hammer fell and the JFK inaugural storm opened the door to one of the most historic 2-3 weeks of winter I've ever experienced. At the peak of the cold, temps were subzero around 2/2/61 with a well modeled and forecasted big azz system on the way. 2/3/61 was a Friday and when I left for school it was around 5. As the clouds owed and thickened, temps made it into the low 20s. Some of the heaviest snow I've ever seen ensued from near 5pm till the next morning. Can you imagine the snow depth with the front of cold snap KU and the continued well below normal regime? I played hooky....told my mother I wasn't feeling well on 2/6 and she made me go to the doctor which is fine because we got to drive around. Huge snow piles enormous! But I also noticed it was a few degrees above freezing and re was some melting. That was the end of the pattern.....poof ...as fast as it came in it was gone. But what a ride! NorEastermass128
I think both January 1994 and January 2004 put up 1/-12 days here. They couldn't get that elusive 0F high which happened in January 1981. I remember we had a 'cold day' school closure in Jan. '04. About -10F or -14F here that morning and -7F at BOS. I think TWC brought in Mike Seidel to cover it.

They couldn't get that elusive 0F high which happened in January 1981. January 1994 was pretty intense...also was my freshman year at Purdue. The 18th had a "just after midnight" high of -9º. Spent the rest of the day in the negative teens below zero. Classes were cancelled that day, fortunately for me. NJwinter23
Jan 04 was definitely one of my favorite winter months with combination of snow and cold. Of course down by NYC we had a much better balance of the snow part into the mix that month, less extreme on the cold but still impressive nonetheless. You didnt have to go too far south from there before both cold and snow were very meh that month. Don't recall it being anything special in DC, for instance. chietanen
I was a medical resident in Syracuse during January of 2004. That was one pretty epic month up there. If I recall correctly, there were at least a couple days that the high failed to crack 0, and many nights well below zero. Lots of snow too, in fact I think it may hold the record for monthly snow for Syracuse. I commuted from Cortland every day on I-81, and there was one morning in particular where there must have been at least 10 accidents in about a 2 mile stretch of 81, including 2 cars sitting on top of the concrete median in between the north and south lanes (the snow created like a ramp and the cars just slid up it)! It was a very cold morning with a dusting of snow, I imagine it was too cold for the road salt or whatever they were using to do any good.

Ginx snewx
I'm not sure you can find 850s much colder than that here in New England. If we had snow cover it would have been epic. Why do you think there was no snow cover? I had multiple small events and ended the month with a 9 inch. There was snow OTG. ace0927
Speaking of vodka, I just returned from Trader Joes and came close to buying an $85 bottle of scotch but opted for the Glenlivet 12 year for under 50 which should be fine. Good radiator going this early evening but clouds moving in. Jerry - here is a website to purchase Scotch (including Livet 12 for $25) http://www.missionliquor.com/Store/Qstore/Qstore.cgi?CMD=011&PROD=000167&PNAME=Glenlivet+12+years+750ml

ORH_wxman
BDL only had snow depth recorded post 1/28.... there was an inch in the middle of the month. Could be wrong though. Not sure what BDL got, but ORH recorded 3.8" on Jan 12-13, 2004 just prior to the outbreak. They also record 1.0" from the clipper that missed south on 1/15...the high that day was 3F. Pretty cool getting snow with temps near 0F around here.

Ginx snewx
BDL had 2 on the 19th too, we had many squally nights with rotting LES and then finished the month with a general 6-10 across CT. Many nights of diamond dust too http://www.erh.noaa.gov/box/snow-info2.shtml

Many nights of diamond dust too http://www.erh.noaa.gov/box/snow-info2.shtml I remember the diamond dust several early mornings....usually when it was below -5F. One morning when it was about -25F at the bottom of the hill, I recall the dust being rather thick. Only time I ever saw it like that where it actually reduced the visibility a bit to the naked eye. Usually its so sparse that it just shines but doesn't impede vis.
ORH_wxman
Jan 2004 also had a very impressive outbreak on the 9th-10th. It would have been a signature outbreak any other winter, but it was over shadowed by the even more extreme outbreak on Jan 14-16. That broke the coldest 3 day stretch on record here. The 3 day temp averaged around -3F. In the 9th and 10th outbreak, BOS broke 2 record low maximums and 1 record low (they came in 2nd on the other date for record low) In the 14th-16th outbreak, BOS had 3 consecutive nights below zero. They didn't even pull that off in 1994.

Ginx snewx
There exists a great Modis Sat shot of Nantucket sound ice. Just read a story about the Wind Farm studies being halted because of the ice. At work on the morning of the 14 th a steam exhaust pipe under pressure failed right next to an outside air handling unit. The combo of pressure fractured droplets and below zero cold manufactured 6 feet of mounded snow in front of the intake , coolest mechanical breakdown ever.
