Logan11
-19F seemed like vodka ...even if very briefly. Didn't NNE just have some vodka?
weathafella
well, I would put the o/u for bos @ 21.5 for the season, so it would take a continuation of bad luck, and a mostly crappy pattern, I don't think it will happen, but worth keepin on back burner It has crossed my mind but mby is so much better that it seems unlikely tht Logan and the immediate few miles of coast could continue to get so skunked particularly as ssts drop. CT Rain
Jan 16, 1994 Oh... better still. That's about as good as it gets. Christmas Day 1980 probably the worst cold in SNE post the 1961 epic Arctic blast?
ORH_wxman
Maybe it's every 10 years..look out next January...lol. Yeah, we didn't do it in Jan 1984....but if you give a 1 month leeway...we had it in Dec 1983. Actually Jan 1981 was epic cold too...but just a terrible terrible winter for snowfall. That was vodka cold and no precip.

Jan 81 was colder I think, but Xmas '80 was probably more anomalous for a single outbreak considering how early it was in the season. Jan 4, 1980 was the last time ORH failed to have a high temp over 0F. Of course for an entire month, 1989 out does them all....but strangely, 1989 did not have a big signature single outbreak like 1994, or Xmas 1980, or 2004 did...it was just almost a full month of non-stop -15 type days, lol. dendrite
Jan 16, 1994 480dm thicknesses over PF's head with that cold shot. I wish I was in MN for the big cold in '96. Pretty crazy to see -40C contours into C MN.
mreaves
I was 14/-4 on 1/3, but I want a day with highs in the single digits and lows -10 to -20. Jan 04 brought back to back days of highs just below zero here and 8 days with highs below 10F which is almost unheard of for this area. I don't need that much cold, but a 1/24/11 would be fine by me. MPV was 6/-16 that day.

That is funny, Will. If you think about 12/1989 it certainly is the most anomalous but you're right it doesn't have that signature day of vodka cold. Jan 1981 as a whole was definitely colder. I think the most brutal "day" in the last 30ish years was 12/25/1980? Jan 4 1980 was -7/3 at BDL. What was cool about 12/25/1980 was how windy it was. CAA dropped BDL from 17F at 5Z to 0F at 9Z and it stayed below zero all day. The 13Z ob is a good one... -11F with NW at 16 knots gusting to 23 knots lol. Scituate44
Interesting to take note of the remaining snow pack in my area today while out and about. I live a little over a mile from the water and the little I got at the end of December has been reduced to patches throughout the yard. Meanwhile if you cross over route 3A and head into the west end of town and head into Norwell, Hanover etc... there is still a solid white landscape of a few inches, shows what a fine line it was the night of that storm 3A seemed to be the dividing line between the winners and losers in that one! The ocean temps in the upper 40's were the killer that night I imagine IMBY hopefully they tickle down a few degrees going forward. This past stretch of cold must have helped out some there was some ice that formed up surrounding the lobster boats at port in the harbor. Down near the water there was maybe half an inch of snow in the storm. Once yet get to Rte 3A it started to pile up a little more. That happens quite often. Yeah the 12/25 daily hi/lo doesn't do it justice since the high was at midnight. The afternoon temps stayed below 0F which is crazy any month, nevermind still in December. It was a pretty quick cold shot though...by the 26th, temps rebounded in the teens and then two days later they cracked freezing. Very intense and brutal, but very short. Logan11
I know we have been over this one before.... But xmas 1980 was the most remarkable cold advection situation I ever recall. 32F and a few inches of wettish snow with the arctic front (or maybe it was a clipper) xmas eve evening and then plunge all the way to -18F! by 7 AM in the morning with an afternoon high of -1. This was at 250' in the HV 38 miles below ALB and 40 miles above POU. But the winter was crap. The best snow storm was 11/17 when we had almost a foot. It seemed like the bulk of them after the xmas period cut west with snow or mix to rain. Jan 81 was colder I think, but Xmas '80 was probably more anomalous for a single outbreak considering how early it was in the season. ORH_wxman
Jan 1984 gave CON their coldest low temp since Feb 1943 (-33F). That's weird...must have been one of those NNE radiational cooling specials or something. Certainly not a pure CAA arctc vodka blast. I mean it was cold no doubt, but lowest temp at ORH that month was -3F, which is meh when talking historic cold outbreaks. Also no high temps below 10F that month. Must have been some fresh snow with perfect conditions for CON....or maybe the airmass clipped them harder or something.
ORH_wxman
Christmas 1983 deserves some props too....4/-7 was the daily split here for that one. It looks more impressive than the 1980 outbreak because of the high, but only because 1980 had the cheap midnight high. It was actually colder during the 1980 outbreal if you started from like 3am onward.

ORH_wxman
I think both January 1994 and January 2004 put up 1/-12 days here. They couldn't get that elusive 0F high which happened in January 1981.

Logan11
It's starting to seem like the 80's weren't so bad after all, but they lacked very many KU's relatively speaking. The 90's and 00's had more I think. Of course that late 80's-early 90's 4 year or so span was unquestionably ugly.
mahk_webstah
I still love the January 1961 lows at BDL. 1/21 -13 1/22 -26 1/23 -19 1/24 -19 Thats just unreal, unimaginable. What was the high on the 22nd? Coldest temperature I've experienced up here was -20 in the winter of 08-09. Experienced -30 once in Ontario. When I lived in the MA I looked forward to arctic outbreaks because they often included or ended with a storm. Up here, they can suppress everything. I have hopes that our upcoming outbreak is slow and seepy. Maybe the SE Ridge and active STJ can help us out
Logan11
FWIW, we had 19 sub zero mornings in Saugerties (Mid HV) in the winter of 1993-94. Not gonna beat that in that location.... I fell to -24 and some parts of town were -30. I still love the January 1961 lows at BDL. 1/21 -13 1/22 -26 1/23 -19 1/24 -

dendrite
I think we've talked about it before, but this (Feb 1943) was a pretty epic cold shot for the region. Some nice late morning obs for BDL. NJwinter23
Here's legit cold from 1/14/04 Ahh with my favorite clipper of all time en-route...had about 7" of broom-worthy powder by the next morning, a high of 15 and then a night that reached 0 with gusty winds. Impressive for down in Jersey.
