aslkahuna
Tropical Depression TD 01W is in the House. Developed from a disturbance that tracked over Mindanao. Now located east of Palawan. Has little future though in the SCS due to the NE Monsoon Steve
patrick05
JMA has upgraded this to a TS Sonamu now--just 3 days into 2013; wonder if that's the earliest named in WPAC??
aslkahuna
It quite possibly could be. Most early Jan systems in WPAC are usually late December carry overs. Steve

aslkahuna
Tropical Depression TD 02W is located near 5.2N 126.1E with winds of 25kt. It is tracking south of Mindanao and is expected to track just south of Zamboanga and through the Sulu Sea into the South China where it may briefly become a TS before falling prey to the NE Monsoon. aslkahuna
TD 02W has dissipated. My personal opinion is that JT issued the advisories strictly because the US Navy is involved in a very politically sensitive and delicate salvage operation near Palawan because of a very embarassing incident that has angered many Filipinos and they didn't want to mess things up. patrick05
Wait, what?A USN minesweeper got stuck at a reef which is a UN Heritage Site and they're currently inthe process of cutting the ship up and remove it from there...The depression moved a couple hundred km south of the area and has delayed the operations because of high waves and strong winds...
