Hoosier
The theme this year was early start and early finish. Tornado season essentially shut down after May 1 as significant drought gripped most of the state. No doubt the most memorable event occurred on March 2, when a major tornado outbreak struck the region. While only 5 tornadoes were confirmed in the state, they resulted in 13 fatalities. 11 deaths occurred in one tornado - an EF4 which struck portions of 4 counties before continuing into Kentucky. Some additional notes about that tornado:-it was the first EF4 in Indiana since the Enhanced Fujita scale was implemented-it produced 4 swaths of EF4 damage over a 49 mile path-it was the 18th tornado to result in at least 10 fatalities within Indiana state lines (includes pre-1950 era)-it was the earliest tornado in a calendar year to result in at least 10 fatalities within Indiana state lines, beating out a tornado from March 11, 1917Data from Oct-Dec is preliminary
IWXwx
I would not have believed the person who told me at the beginning of 2012 that Indiana would have only 4 tornadoes between April-December.
Sidewinder
I went to NE and KS in April to chase and am glad I did, saw the Salina tornado. Indiana had nothing chase-worthy the entire year, not even a decent squall line. *edit*Except Henryville, but you had to be in the right location at the right time to see that one. Hoosier
Fixed an error with the ratings for 2012 (8 EF0 instead of 9, 7 EF1 instead of 6). While I'm at it, I added 2012 stats to this table. Strange fatality to injury ratio this year, but I don't decide the numbers, I only pass them on. ukrocks
Hoosier, how rare is it for Indiana to not have one single tornado touchdown in October and November? I know in Kentucky, it's extremely rare.
andyhb
With that injury count, the injuries with the New Pekin/Henryville tornado were never listed in the survey, so I'd imagine they are significantly higher.
Hoosier
Hoosier, how rare is it for Indiana to not have one single tornado touchdown in October and November? I know in Kentucky, it's extremely rare. Not that unusual. Since 1950, there have actually been more years without Oct or Nov tornadoes than years with tornadoes. The only years with documented touchdowns in BOTH months are 1955, 1965, 1978, 1981, 1992, and 2001.
IWXwx
I never realized how badly the '80's sucked for tornadoes in IN.
