Asheville ties 115-year-old weather record

ASHEVILLE — The city tied a 115-year-old record Saturday with a high temperature of 70 degrees for much of the afternoon. Meanwhile, forecasters were keeping an eye on an approaching weather system that could deluge the region with rain over the next several days.

Jeffrey Taylor, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Greer, said the temperatures tied the original record from Jan. 12, 1898.

“It’s becoming more typical over the last several years to see warmer temperatures approaching or breaking records,” Taylor said. "With overall warming patterns, it definitely increases the chances of breaking those records more and more.

Today should bring a similarly warm afternoon, with highs still in the upper 60s, but temperatures will drop off as early as Monday with a high of 61 degrees. Highs will settle in the upper 40s for the rest of the week.

Rainy weather is in the forecast, too.

A front is expected to stall out over the mountains late today through Tuesday, and rainfall amounts could approach 4 inches in the Western North Carolina mountains.

Some localized flooding is possible, according to the weather service. A return to more seasonal winter temperatures is expected later this week.

NWS Blacksburg

So for today...break out the T-shirts...shorts...suntan lotion and the likes and enjoy a taste of Florida like weather. Grill a few dogs/burgers/steaks on the grill and soak it up. Kick the kids out doors for the afternoon and raise the windows. What I am really trying to get at...is just get out and enjoy the day...because if you don't...you’re going to miss the middle winter tropical cruise. After today...it’s all downhill.

when is it going to get cold and hopefully snow?  I thought next weekend was to get cold but long range forecast shows sunny and in the 40's.  that's average for this time of year.  I've been hearing real cold like highs in the 20's and lows in the single digits for the nc mtns.  where is the fun and games or where is the BEEF.

Patience.  Patience.  You're comparing NWS (or some other site) forecasts to model outputs.  The NWS is going to be conservative a week out and stick closer to climatology.  As we get closer to the cold being modeled on the GFS and ECMWF, they will adjust their forecasts downward if the cold continues to hold up on the modeling.  They don't give everybody rope to hang them by a week in advance.  I wouldn't either, if I were them.

It has to rain itself out first to bring in your dry cold if that is what you are looking for. I am hopeful for some snow too later on if we get lucky. 3+ inches is like a monthly average...we will likely not have heavy moisture to work once we get the cold air for some time...well not this much anyway. February is not far off tho by the time the cold air gets here.

It's not often you break a 97 year old temp record by 5º.

Well Atlanta didn't smash it's record (only one degree), however it had stood for an impressive 123 years. Remarkable weather we've had this weekend.
