Camping in January?

I hope you're packing a Yukon stove to keep warm! Are you looking for Sasquatch?

Where are you camping? Hopefully, Florida.

My wife, kids, and I camp several times each year from March to October.  We try to do one annual winter outing, but this year it's just my son and me camping near Creedmoor for his rifle and shotgun merit badges in Scouts.  My wife can handle 32 degree mornings outside okay, but 20 degree lows this weekend is a little much for her.  Dress well, bring the right gear, and stay busy and it's usually not a problem.  I have a Mr. Heater Portable Buddy that I use when changing clothes, etc.

I don't want to swear off any wintery weather this weekend, but if it's going to do something, it's easier to deal with snow than sleet or freezing rain.  They shoot on Saturday when it's supposed to be sunny and mid-30s.  Friday evening is the big mystery.

I don't want to clog discussion asking stupid questions, but can someone explain to me specifically how NGa is WSW material, but when channel 2 just ran their model almost all precip (frozen) was south of warning area and showed almost no precip for areas north. The model they ran was like absolutely nothing I have seen here in the last few days.

Because they are preparing themselves for a bust unless we are talking the mountains.

Were they using the RPM?

Lol I just got caught up on the brick meltdown. I guess the roads could get bad?

Really? Did he say that?

DOT treating the roads around here already with brine. Seems a little early to me. I don't think that stuff works well, anyway, especially on ice.

People are still waiting for the big one. But I think a lot of people are too focused on the amounts with this one. It's not going to be much snow, but it can still have a big impact on the roads.

Mix a couple of inches of snow with sleet and freezing rain and it's going to be major trouble on the roads.

Even if it's not a lot of qpf, it could still be bad for the roads. This is what a half inch of snow can do around here.

Yeah, a lot of folks are concerned about the low amounts of qpf. If it is all snow, it might not be as bad, but if it is ice it could be a whole other story. Whatever falls is going to stick on the roads fast with the cold we have this week. It doesn't take that much ice on the roads to cause havoc.

I agree. We have seen this before. Still time for things to get wetter. But even just a little bit of snow/ice will cause problems on the roads here with it being so cold.

I think even a mix of the Euro and GFS could be a big mess here. It won't take much with the cold temps we will have this week to cause a glaze of ice on the roads, and that is all you need here to cause havoc.

Yeah, it loos like the models are trending more to the Euro than vice versa. Even if it's not 3 to 4 inches of all snow here and there is mixing, this could be a big impact on the roads with the temps being so cold. It might be even worse if there is mixing.

Yes, that is what I am saying. It doesn't take much to cause problems, and with temps as low as they are going to be this week, it will start to stick fast on the roads. I have seen plenty of havoc around here with just minor freezing drizzle events. I think it happened more often in the 80s and 90s, though.

I remember our last big ice storm in Dec 02 wasn't projected to do much, either. Then I woke up with no power and a tree branch on the hood of my car. I also remember once when I was in high school and went to get on the bus and slid crossing the street because of a little freezing drizzle. Later, our bus couldn't make it up a hill and the police had to give people on the bus rides home. There were wrecks all day in front of my house. That event wasn't supposed to do much, either. These CAD events can be surprising. And we don't even need much for it to be havoc on the roads.

The Euro is on our side and it seems the NAM is trending better. I don't think we need much if it's going to be a mix of snow and ice for things to get interesting around here. It might not be good for building a snowman, but it would still cause major problems on the roads with the temps being so cold this week.

It doesn't appear to be a lot of precip involved with this system, but that can always change. As others have said, we don't need a lot to cause havoc on the roads here. In fact, these systems that bring a mix bag often create a lot of trouble on the road. It's not good when you have ice on top of snow or vice versa.

Euro looks good for central NC.

That kind of mess always creates havoc on the roads here.

Good evening.. Sorry so late with the forecast but I have been extremely busy and guidance agreement with this event has been almost non existant..but lets get right to it though!

A clipper type system is set to cause some trouble in the south with just nuisance snows more northward. As this system is moving across the northern states another feature will develop across the midsouth along and ahead of the cold front. Precipitation will break out from west to east across the Tennessee valley tomorrow. This precip will fall through an above freezing level in the upper atmosphere but due to the colder airmass at the surface the precip will freeze on contact in some spots.

This will create a very dangerous situation across Tennessee..northern Georgia and parts of the Carolinas. Ice accumulations could exceed .50 inches in some spots which will be more than enough to cause power outages broken tree limbs and very dangerous driving conditions.

I centered this forecast graphic across the southern states because there is really nothing significant that will happen more northward. There is the potential for some 2-5 inch snow accumulations across West Virginia.. SW Virgiinia.. NE Tennessee and northern North Carolina. The blue areas on the graphic will likely be all snow and the pink/red areas will be a wintry mix of rain/sleet/freezing rain and snow where the blue area meets the pink area. This is a very complicated forecast so confidence level is lower than it would normally be. Everyone in the pink area will need to monitor their weather very closely.

Wait!  I'd like to propose an amendment to the rules before you decide on Brick.

Proposed Amendment: All timeouts are to be served hanging upside down in front of a TV that is showing nothing but reruns of Miami's January local forecasts.

I feel shafted....again. From now on I'm picking the model and run that fits me best (NGA) and unplugging. I was excited for .25 ice storm here. I even dusted off the monopoly and scrabble games for me and the kids, hoping there would be no power or at least no TV and internet.

I'm bumming....... cliff diving and think I'll take my balls and go home.

I know how you feel, the freezing virga storm imby just went *poof*  :(

I hope it continues to trend drier and warmer. Muhahahaha.

Really? Did he say that?

 That's only half of it

I have been having a problem posting on my Blackberry. Every time I try to post or reply, I get a message that I don't have permission. Even when I ask nicely, it doesn't work. I tried logging out and logging back in. No luck (it worked the last time this happened). I tried rebooting the BB. No dice. Anyway, just thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone had any suggestions on how to fix it. TIA.

I've been having the same issue.  Buckeye put me in touch w/ Wow and we've been working on the problem.  No luck so far but it's not just you.

So, I'm trying to understand why my posts keep getting deleted. This IS a weather board, right? And I AM asking questions about the Friday event in the Friday event thread. WTH? If this is only a weather board for "experts" or people that understand all the lingo, then it would be nice if someone would inform me of that. Geez. I looked at the rules and I know we're not supposed to ask IMBY questions. The entire state of NC isn't my backyard, so that violation doesn't apply.

Maybe my question will be answered here. Does the Friday event look to be mainly in SC and GA?

Ok, good deal. Thanks man. Let me know what you find out! It's weird. It stopped working the other day, but like I said, I logged out and back in and it worked. Now, it's out again. Who knows, maybe tomorrow it'll work again.

that is what is considered an IMBY question and not worthy in the discussion thread. And if you would do a little reading in the discussion thread , your question would be answered.

See, I am not the only one who feels this way.
