Bevo
Gah - we can't seem to solve the ongoing riddle of winter. It's actually beginning to annoy ME now. It takes a lot for an uncontrollable atmospheric natural occurrence to get under my skin. It's too bad Lightnin' Hopkins never wrote a song about such times. Edit*** (because I just noticed my OBS) WTH? 70 degrees at 11:30 AM on January 21,2013. I call MAJOR bollocks.

Cold Rain
February is going to suck. Wall to wall warmth and no snow possibilities whatsoever.
Chattownsnow
man it sure does seem like it takes a lot to just get normal temperatures around here... every year it seems that the planet has seen one of the warmest years on record... the arctic saw an amazingly low minimum this year. I think its just going to take more and more to get things to align for any decent snowstorm in the southeast anymore. I can't help but wonder what the winters of 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 would have been like if they happened in the 70's and 80's. I don't think anyone really knows what the heck is going on. WilkesboroDude
Sky still healing here. Pattern Changers - Hurricane Sandy - Last Weeks Storm I am leaving the door open for (1) major winter storm before Spring. In fact, I think it could be a big dog for NC. More on this later. WilkesboroDude
WeatherMatrix This is HUGE. While NASA takes pains to not say it in so many words, they are inferring (for the first time) that we could be going into a period of Global Cooling caused by the Sun, though they say that is "speculation" and more research is needed (fair, let's do it!) Here are the quotes you can put together: "The mechanism for [The Little Ice Age] cooling could have been a drop in the sun’s EUV output [The Maunder Minimum]; this is, however, speculative. Indeed, the sun could be on the threshold of a mini-Maunder event right now. That area should make preparations now for above normal temperatures and drought conditions for the next 100 years."
Brick Tamland
So has the southeastern Atlantic. So, my last comment in the Jan discussion thread was deleted, and so was your reply to my comment, even though it was discussing the nature of the forecasting this winter. I really don't get the inconsitency in the moderating there.
Brick Tamland
And another comment bites the dust. Meanwhile, a comment saying, "And that helps the SE how" is good to go.
Brick Tamland
Euro looks good for central NC. I think Euro verbatim for central NC would be light snow/ice flip to sleet/rain and light snow. Piedmont NW NC would be all snow. That kind of mess always creates havoc on the roads here.

Brick Tamland
I think what we have seen the last two years is backing up the opinions. It's just experience. And not sure how to reply to something in the other thread in here with it making sense. I don't understand why it has to be so strict in there. We have seen plenty of times the models show warmth here and it happens, and when they show cold it backs off the closer we get to when the cold comes. I don't know if anyone has done research on that, but has been my experience with all this the last two winters.

Cold Rain
Always feels better when the euro shows a favorable solution I agree. It's still an aberration at this point, but hopefully, we an see a legitimate southward trend develop. I've felt like the potential has at least been there for the southern wave in the trough create a wave on the front. Would be nice to see us trend in that direction. See, I don't understand why something like this and what I wrote can't be in the other thread. As long as it's actually discussing the forecast and models. It's not the same as just saying, "I want some snow!" or "The models suck!" That is banter.

Brick Tamland
RDU is 0.46", probably front end snow, mix (rain/sleet) than flip back. I only have 6 hour panels so not sure. I wonder how much of this would end up as frozen.
metalicwx366
Lol when the CFS is showing cold people say it has been doing well this year, now when it's showing warm, apparently it hasn't performed well this year. Bestforecast on wunderground has me in the 80s a week from today while NWS in the 50s on wunderground.
