MotoWeatherman
Looking forward to testing out my new elevation with this storm. I moved 2 weeks ago and my new home is at 1,700ft just NE of Dahlonega. Every foot helps in these parts. LOL
Bevo
I'm really close to skipping classes on Friday morning and just driving back to Chapel Hill. You may want to just stay put if the crazy NAM is *correct...(I still shudder when I say it).
Bevo
Looks like most of SC will get left out of this snowstorm. At least it looks as if we get a good rain out of it. Per which model?

Your elevation and mine are almost identical. I am at 1,675ish. With our mountains here you are golden if you are 2500 to 3000 and higher. It's almost like a different world up there. Good luck to you and thanks for your contributions to our board.
jshetley
Per which model? The mounains and areas from Oconee through York counties near the NC line do get some snow, but rest of the state does not. Maybe a mix along I-85 but that still leaves most of the state out of it. Maybe a mix along I-85 but that still leaves most of the state out of it. I see. It will be splitting hairs along I-85 until you start to reach NW Spartanburg County into Cherokee County. But I'm leaning toward better chances from Spartanburg County west/northwest (Greenville/Pickens/Oconee) with each NAM run. ***Edit: It never really was an event for most of SC to begin with, and I'm still skeptical about the NAM's prog for it's performance now. In my opinion, anything from I-85 up to the state line will be more of a slushy mess if anything.

That said, I had some sleet for a few mins a few weeks ago so this winter has already been better than last year.
dsaur
I saw that the ULL is now a double looper and Burger mentioned this earlier but did not elaborate. Might I pick your brain for any thoughts on this development? Sorry to not get back to you sooner! I was grocery shopping and all the shelves are bare. Not due to the cat herding ULL from Space, but they are moving the store, mores the pity, lol. Anyway, as Burger said, it is wrapping up and getting colder aloft. More closed rings better lift, more juice, bigger bang. It is best to be under or just north. A few years ago one come down the ridge bringing colder air, because it came from where the cold air actually is, and it went around the bottom of the trough around Columbus. I got maybe 6 or 8 or more but is was melting so fast, it only measured out at 4 or 6 in the end. To get official you have to leave it to settle for a few hours, and when it's hot like this, it's gone while it falls Anyway, up where you are you'd have probably gotten some nice sun, while I got snow, so the territory covered wasn't very wide. I'd like it to come over me, so I can get in the dynamics, and maybe see some sleet, or a flake, but in reality, if I can't sled on it, it doesn't do much for me anymore. I figure I've got maybe 10 or 12 winters left where I can actually do something with sleet/snow, and after that I'm happy to sit in the window, drooling, and look at it. Right now, while I am still manly and virile, like my buddy Burns, I want the real deal. 3 or more inches of sleet, frozen down hard for a week, lol. chapelhillwx
Why back to Chapel Hill when you can go an hour NW and see plenty of snow? That's a good point..... well, I don't really have anywhere in particular to stay up there. I did drive up I26 to Wolf Laurel during the Sandy snow event, which was awesome..... but I don't have AWD anymore.
chapelhillwx
You may want to just stay put if the crazy NAM is *correct...(I still shudder when I say it). 18z? I dunno, it didn't look to impressive.... what should I be looking at? It looked like on that hour 33 p-type map that was posted I was just *barely* snow. Edit: of course, if we do flip to snow, that's 2.5" or so of QPF to work with, so it should be heavy/

We'll be on pins and needles until the snow starts but personally I'm feeling great about this one for pretty much everyone in NC outside of those in the far SE portions. But the qpf rates could put down a quick hit of heavy stuff from SPTG to TR. Again - I'm not blowing that horn....yet. I think the 00Z will tell the tale for me. If it continues the trend, I would feel better about a corridor of heavy wet snow from Spartanburg to Traveler's Rest. You're just south of TR, right? lilj4425
Soil temps will be too warm, warm air advection will occur, downsloping will cause the qpf to go poof...something bad will happen and screw it up for your area.

People don't believe me when I say that this winter has been on the cold side for *me...I call it Wedgeland. Forecasting this side of the Apps can be cruel. And, ULL's are just nut balls to begin with, so these events can drive you mad. I'm no stranger to Furman - I'm a regular in the Greenville Scottish Games. You might as well be in TR. T I remember that storm and I remember our employee in Forrest Park sending me pics and my hair curling wildly from the steam coming out my ears. "How the hay field can Atlanta and points south get snow and me NADA." My biggest fear with this system is the kids will be home on Friday with no snow to play in or periods of no power. Usually that spells a poker marathon where Mom is writing checks to cover her loses.Oh heck they get all my money anyway, and they are learning valuable poker skills for college. I woke up expecting to torch each of the last few days and I think the highest we got was 70 or so. Chapel Hill, where I'm from, actually kissed 80 a few times while we were stuck in the wedge.... weird considering CH usually does pretty well in CAD events. I've hit 70 degrees a total of 4 times (I think) since December. Two of those were in the first week of Dec. which isn't unusual. Folks in eastern NC however - yeah...suck city this year.
