HIPPYVALLEY
According to Greenfield DPW the average here for the past 25 years is 56".
ORH_wxman
I've been all over the state this week and the snow pack out here is definitely more substantial than anything else I've seen. Parts of N Worcester Co. might have had more snow total but last thursday's system dropped 10-14" of dense, low ratio snow from C Franklin Co. W to the Berks. Your higher totals from Dec 27 will def help you out. I doubt those other spots lose it though...they still have 4-7" of that dense stuff underneath the fluffier snow. Just not the 10" of dense snow that you guys got. Regardless, we'll see what it looks like in 10 days.
Quincy
60-70 here It's low end, perhaps just over 60. I'm trying to see if I can find data for the Mansfield Hollow coop location.

I just drove up 95 to Portland, up 26 to Sunday River. Took the road from SR to North Conway, then down 16 to 95 and home. I thought the snow cover was pretty light from around Marshfield all the way up through Portsmouth. Heck even in North Conway there are fields where the snow sublimated to bare ground by yesterday. It's thicker up towards Bretton Woods, thicker back by Sunday River and in the passes but I bet no more than 8-12" Covered yes, but as I drove around NH and ME I kept thinking this is what it used to look like in SNE in a decent winter, not NNE. Cold Miser
Can we change the subtitle of this thread? What the hell does "gin up a snow event mean"? I fell like the word "nape" needs to be thrown in there somewhere.
ORH_wxman
It's low end, perhaps just over 60. I'm trying to see if I can find data for the Mansfield Hollow coop location. Elevation at the coop is only 250 feet. So probably not very good for trying to get snowfall in the hills. I think that coop also has fragmented snow data, so the average is probably low to begin with. The southbridge coop in MA just over the border at 700 feet averages around 55"..with a bit of missing data, so realistically its probably closer to 60". Cold Miser
FWIW, an approximate map for average annual snowfall across Connecticut. (not sure if I posted this before) The coast = mid Atlantic

I wish I had kept more data when I lived in Woodstock, CT. The snowfall there was almost always significantly more than areas in say Willimantic and Mansfield. With that said, go over to the Union higher elevations and the amounts were even more impressive.

Climo for snow depth in ORH (1961-1990 as snow depth was discontinued in 1994) at 1,000 feet for the beginning of January is just a shade over 3 inches. For CON, its closer to 5". For Bridgton, ME its around 8". I'd say you had a nice ride on the wintry side of climo. Those numbers would be low if you take that ride on Feb 1st instead, for sure. mahk_webstah
Well to be fair...a potential gradient pattern where the trough is focused over the mountain west is far from "safe"....it risks cutters. Its a high risk, high reward pattern. You can end up with a lot of snow events and stay cold, or you could very realistically end up with 3 cutters in a row. One reason we'll root for the NAO to get more and more negative...press that gradient south to make it more unlikely we see a cutter. OK I'll alllow a weak to moderate -NAO

It's wall to wall snowcover on the way home. Makes sense, for some reason I thought climo depth was higher this time of year up north. What was shocking Will was the lack of ice anywhere. By yesterday morning the river that runs just west of downtown North Conway was starting to freeze but still, wow.

Same thing here with the unique combination of deep snowpack and just recently frozen over lakes/ponds that have no snowcover on them at all. Usually it's the opposite. Ginx snewx
The hills in Woodstock are definitely king weenie land in the quiet corner of NE CT. Great retention area too.

I can't imagine it had any frozen on it just a couple days ago.

My town's largest lake just started freezing over on sunday. I've not seen it since, but it's probably close to 100% frozen by now. This is about 2-3 weeks behind schedule. The local ponds here have been freezing/thawing since late November.

ChrisM
It's low end, perhaps just over 60. I'm trying to see if I can find data for the Mansfield Hollow coop location. That will not even come close to comparing to Kevin. Mansfield Hollow is basically IJD...downslope capital of CT. I also disagree with the Salisbury area on that map...they probably get downsloped pretty bad too off those 2-2.5k hills to the west.

ChrisM
That CT map isn't all that accurate. There's a lot on there that needs tweaking. what needs tweaking? NWesternmost Harwinton needs to be in the 70-80? haha

I just thought you meant that you would look at Mansfield to compare to Kevin. The map looks good but that comparison would literally be like 30" different I think. Mansfield Hollow is at like 200' (I THINK) and really downsloped.
