The First Week of Jan..Bitter cold,Balls drop as we ring in 2013

Damage In Tolland

Recommended Posts

Fwiw the cfs2 has warmed quite a bit. The latest prog from 12/31 seen on sv has January meh but NW of us warmer vs normal. February not cold...slightly mild and Morch being Morch. That said, the mid month torch is effecting the January means and around MLK and beyond in January it is progged cold.

iOW...very little guidance doesn't warm us up substantially sometime around or just before mid January. Of course it's all been wrong before and the little nuance of a misplaced boundary could make the difference between feast and famine.

Ugly. We can always hope for transitional events but prolonged snowpack in sne seems unlikely.

Chilly morning.  I have 13.8.  BOS now down to 17 which makes it the coldest so far of this season and the the first teens of the season there which is remarkable this late.  We should stay AOB freezing till Friday at the earliest.

14 here. tonight / tomorrow a good bet to be the coldest of the season.

I remember that January 2009 cold snap.  That was a frigid one.

Maine had their all time cold temp record set, as already mentioned:  -50 at Big Black River.

I had a -27 here in Corinth.  By several degrees, that was the coldest morning I've recorded since living at this house (six years now).

0 here this morning with light snow after getting to -4 overnight.  Coldest night of the season here...

Did not get a chance to look at the ozgfs but the 6z 0z euro and canadian are all hideous? Did the Ens change?

Gfs and GEFS aren't so bad. Relatively short lived warmth outta here mid month or soon thereafter. I'm hearing euro is worse. Cmc ens aren't too bad either. For the next week, it looks ok depending on latitude.

I think joe posted above normals yesterday for the big 4 but the drop by midnight obliterated that and BOS/ORH were subnormal. The next 3-6 days should build on ths at least for MA since we may for now be north of the gradient coming.

We'll turn mild later into the 6-10 day period and part of the 11-15 day I think. It's all about where the front will lie. I think we'll have at least one low go west...but hopefully that low can help push the cold east. I still don't like the look of the pattern, but we'll just have to see how it shakes out.

Yes that's evident. But for the next 6 it will at least feel like winter. d if we're lucky we can crimp some of the oncoming heat.

Yeah hopefully. I wish we could have at least sneak in a clipper or something though. A waste of decent cold....although it did knock BOS harbor down two degrees..lol.

Euro ensembles def show more potential for a storm to cut west around 1/11-12. GFS actually had it too, except the GFS made it pretty cold afterward. Euro ensembles not as much.

Will I read that you are not overly excited at all about the pattern after this weeks winter set up, are you about ready to punt the first 15 or so days of this month or do you see any promise for sne, any potential for something sneaky which looks to have gone by the wayside at least for this week.
