beavis1729
Very impressive arctic air in the N Plains. At 8AM, it's -22 at the Minot AFB with a NW wind at 21 mph (wind chill -51). Their forecast high today is -14.
Geos
The snow band in SE WI is decent enough to drop visibilities down to a quarter mile. Good for a couple tenths.
daddylonglegs
Brutal day coming up with wind/single digit highs and clouds.... Just the way to end Jan...
turtlehurricane
It got cloudy again, but it was clear a little while ago and the air was filled with diamond dust. Temp still dropping despite being daytime, at 8.5 F on top of the meteorology building.
frostfern
Lake effect is fairly widespread but not terribly impressive in terms of snowfall rates. The wind speed is a bit too strong. About an inch so far from off and on light snow showers. The local stations were all hyping this like crazy last night.
frostfern
I just noticed the winds are taking the lake effect bands all the way across lower peninsula. Anyone know what the 850 mb wind speeds are?
daddylonglegs
Had a little sun here, now back in the clouds... a few flurries at times... maybe blowing snow. Cold with temp around 8F... Probably not the day to go frolicking and prancing in the snow.
mnweather
I have 8F. Bottomed out at 3 last night. A little warmer than expected. Tonight is gonna be brutal though especially with the wind chill.
Ottawa Blizzard
Well, Toronto isn't even close to the snow futility record for January; it looks like January 1916 keeps the crown with only about 8cm/3" for the whole month! http://www.climate.weatheroffice.gc.ca/climateData/dailydata_e.html?timeframe=2&Prov=ONT&StationID=5051&mlyRange=1840-01-01|2006-12-01&cmdB1=Go&Month=1&Year=1916&Day=8 Had to laugh yesterday when listening to the news. A reporter asked a lady what she thought of the mild weather and she said that it 'scared" her as it meant that something wasn't right with the weather. January 1916 was milder than this January with the half the amount of snow we've had. January 1921 was also mild and saw only 4" of snow the entire month. turtlehurricane
Some real nice bursts of snow here in the past hour. Same in Madison, visibility got as low as a a quarter mile and we have .02" liquid equivalent. The few surfaces that managed to get cleaned in the past day are covered again. cyclone77
Had some arctic sunshine mixed with passing clouds/flurries most of the day. No accumulation, but definitely mood flakes. Temp down to 1 above. Should dip to about -4 for our 2nd sub zero of the season. Probably the last too.
Brewers
5° right now but with clearing skies a subzero low looks likely.

michsnowfreak
January 2013 final at DTW:Mean temp: 28.7F, which was +3.1F but nowhere near the top 20 warmest Januaries. Snowfall finished at exactly 10.0", just a few inches below normal. Season to date snowfall through Jan 31st is 21.0" at DTW, which is also just a few inches below normal. Though its by the slimmest of margins, both Dec & Jan had double-digit snowfall totals. January had 17 days with 1"+ snowcover at obs time, EXACTLY normal. 12 days had 3"+ on the ground, which is a day more than normal, but only 2 days had 5"+ on the ground, which is a few days less than normal. The 3.45" of precip that fell makes it the 12th wettest January on record.
snowstormcanuck
Finished the month with 8.7". Snowcover was limited to a few days and no single snowfall exceeded 2.4". It could have been worse obviously but still it was an extremely unsatisfying month for a winter wx lover.
Hoosier
Terrible month. Temps a little above average, precip well above average, but getting snow was close to an impossible chore. But we might outdo our January snow total before February has barely started.

cyclone77
Pretty awful month here overall. Nice amount of rain, which is nice for the drought, but for a January it wasn't very wintry. 2.3" of snow was all we could muster. First time I can ever remember going into Feb with a seasonal total less than 7". http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/545/janoc.jpg/'>
