Chicago Storm

Recommended Posts

Even though temps were in the low 20's the snow was melting on many surfaces...and blowing off of others. The grass is the only thing it was efficiently accumulating on.

The decent burst of -SN this afternoon at ORD was much shorter than here, so the 0.1" is believable compared to the 0.3" here.

That is shocking considering this cold snap.

Posted this in the lake effect thread as its technically lake effect lol, but its probably more pertinent in here. For the 2nd night in a row, we had 0.3" of lake effect rime snow (though last nights had 0.01" water, tonights 0.02"). Its like the tundra, pixie dust everywhere.

About an inch of crunchy powder on the ground (though 1.9" has fallen the last 3 days..this stuff settles)...took a pic of footprints on the deck...this rime sparkles!

Almost got attacked by a deer.  It jumped in front of my car and I slammed into it at about 30 mph.  I pulled the car over to check for damage then went over to the deer that was laying in the middle of the road.  It got up and charged straight at me, hobbling around madly and screeching, forcing me to run back to the car and slam the door.  Really freaky.  So sad to see an animal in that much pain.

Maybe they get more active because it's clear and the moon is out.  Who knows.  My car seems to be fine but it was too cold and dark to do a thorough look.

Warm up for next week is looking worse and worse.... High pressure scoots off to the east and instead of a moderation, the dry plains heat up like mad and it just torches everything to the east.

We need to get some sprinklers installed out west.

12z GFS now barely even moves the surface front to the south following the sunday disturbance, then surges 50+ temps up into Iowa Monday afternoon.  Verbatim this run has 57 in Cedar Rapids by noon Tuesday with low 60s in the Quad Cities.  The GFS way underdid temps here during the torch a few days ago.

If only ORD had the :weenie:  measurer that MKE has, we picked up 1.3" yesterday, likely to be more than we get with this next pathetic clipper.  I got a little under an inch, so I suppose it makes sense.

Lol, I find this very hard to believe. I was up at UWM all day and they didnt get much more than a  dusting.

+0.5º at LAF for January through yesterday. Probably closer to 0.0 after today. Adding ++ departures on Tue and Wed though. Thinking Tue could hit 60º here...

Not bad, we are still at +3 locally... We will probably finish up around +1 though... The 2 day warm-up will ensure a positive departure.

Well most of our accumulation was in the evening, so I guess those last little brief snow showers were pretty heavy at the airport.

Yeah I suppose that could of done it, but its still questionable. The climate report they issued last night at around 7PM only had 0.1" of snow for the day so somehow the airport picked up an inch plus of snow between climate reports.

925 mb temps get up to around 13C. Could be quite a bit of clouds but we'd probably still make it if 925 mb gets that warm. Also...and it's no use going too deeply in yet...but this may be one of the better January convective threats in a while.

Those snow showers last night were up to 40dbz last night, so I can believe a report like that. They lost some strength going into Racine County.

Up to 11 F in Madison, much better than the 0 F when walking to work this morning. Maybe my nose hairs won't freeze on the walk home.

Officially got 1.2" yesterday, pushing the season total up to 24.5". Still plenty of snow on the ground, it's not going anywhere since we have overcast and temps 20 F below freezing. Still got piles from the big storm too. Technically Madison has had continuous snow cover of at least 1" since 12/18.
