michsnowfreak
Nice pictures michsnowfreak. I love seeing the white snow laying on the ground during a beautiful sunset. It makes winters worth living for. I don't get that oppurtunity very much but it's picturesque when I do get the chance. That being said, I hate these cold days without snow on the ground. I'd rather it be in the 40's and 50's with the sunshine to make it feel nice. Thanks . I too love the snow laying on the ground.
Geos
The cold air is beginning to take it's toll on the area rivers. The Rock River is starting to freeze over pretty good now. Of course this won't last long with the warm air coming in next week. The water level is still extremely low. During times of flood the water would have been about 10 feet over my head at this location. This is just outside of Erie. That picture really shows where the water line is usually. Look at the bridge supports just left of center and the next one to the right. Local rivers are a little below normal. The rain on 12/20 really helped them out. Hovering at 8° right now. --- Great pictures Snowfreak! There's nothing like a winter sunset! No other season can duplicate the colors.
The_Global_Warmer
Thing is that Januarys have been getting much warmer in recent decades. Just go to the Environment Canada webiste and skim through some of the years if you get the chance. If you were a betting person, you would bet on a warm January overall these days. Toronto likely to tie December 1931 and December 2011 for one of the warmest Decembers since records began in 1839, with 2006 being the warmest. Anyways, I realize that's off topic and should probably be a topic for the climate change forum. Look's like the Bering Sea has been cold. And Southern Russia/Kazakhstan and SE China having some pretty big cold anomaly's show up. I used 1950-1995 to cover more than just a cold period to remove some bias. Of course it will get slammed and condemned to the CC Forum. But this is reality. This has taken place. And there is a difference between talking about your reality vs speculating on human impact on climate change and the future of it. There is so much disconnect between what CLIMO means and it's effect on what to except weather wise. In our local forum we are not even allowed to post graphs like these to talk about our weather. They apparently do not matter and have nothing to do with weather. I guess if your synoptically talking about a specific system that is true. but when we talk about medium to long range like 5-20 days out or more, then this should take big time precedence. But again, the top graph is so emotionally distressing we can't talk about it. You are told it has nothing to do with weather. But just like here, the majority of the talk outside of a specific system thread pertains more to these graphs and the overall scheme VS breaking down thermal ribbon placement, moisture transport, trowel possibilities you name it. The end result is constant whining. I guess if you skip the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. But mostly skip around 1996 to now and block out most of 2000s then you will have a pretty distorted view of our CURRENT REALITY. Then endless absurd negativity ensues as if many are stuck in 1980, 1990, or 2000 VS reality today. It's 2013, so which graph below would be wiser to weigh for an outline of expectations of January. Of course the ugly green, yellow, and red one is the better one for our purposes. Does this mean we can't get cold? NO Does this mean we can't get record snow events? NO Does this mean we can't get wall to wall snow cover in places? NO Does this mean it's more likely to be warmer than it was Pre 2000? Yes. Just a small sample to show it get's cold still. We remember the good January's of 2010 and 2011. Then we look at the coldest January's in the last 100 years I believe. Look's to me like we just have to adjust expectations a bit. Chicago WX
down to 2 so far this morning. wonder if we will dip any lower as the sun comes up. Overachiever, nice. Dropped to at least 6º at IND. Coldest winter temp there since Feb 10, 2011. Snow cover FTW.

Chicago WX
No I'm serious. Wintry appeal doesn't mean widespread accumulating snow, but flakes in the air late Saturday and into Sunday for some people is definitely possible IMO. Take what you can get. We'll see I guess... Chicago WX
wintery appeal = mood dust, got it. Yeah, let's not get crazy. I'm just saying window dressing for most. Though I think parts of WI/MI may want to watch the northern disturbance for a little more possibly. Just throwing stuff at the wall...

Jonger
So my brother in-law and sister just came back from Winnipeg yesterday evening.. Without ANY insinuation, they mention how little snow there was in Chicago at the airport. I started chuckling inside knowing the fun that comment would bring on this site. Even paints a small area of 0.10" over Snowfreak for one time frame. I guess nickel and diming through the boring stretch is better then nothing! --- Low of 8° this morning. Coldest since Feb. 11th. Chicago WX
12z Op Euro agrees with the torch, obviously. Widespread 50's, to some probably getting into the 60's for a couple of days...verbatim. Quickly after that though, there's probably some wintry opportunities. All la la land of course...

beavis1729
Almost 10 degrees warmer in Chicago right now than here. lol ORD did drop to 10 degrees this morning. Not a big deal in most winters (normal low is 15)...but honestly, with no snow cover, I would say it overachieved a bit. And, it's the coldest morning of the season so far. Single digits occurred over the light snow cover in the NW suburbs, and out towards Rockford.

wisconsinwx
Had some steady flurries earlier today for a few hours. I thought it was worth mentioning since it will probably be boring for the next week until we are likely to get back into an active pattern. While it is nice to have a cold period for once, with relatively minimal snowcover it doesn't do as much for me as I thought, so if we have to have a warmup ahead of the next major storm, so be it.
