michsnowfreak
Another cold night in store. Some fresh rime from surprise LES tonight, about an inch of crunchy powder on the ground...will we go below zero again? Or will the clouds foil that? Hoosier
Reflectivity beginning to wane a bit on the latest scans. Looks like the fire is either running out of fuel, or the firefighters are reigning it in. 1/3 of the Chicago Fire Department was on the scene according to one of the local stations. First thing that automatically popped into my mind for some reason was the movie Backdraft.
markwx
Here's another look at the smoke plume using the dual-pol capabilities of the LOT WSR-88D. Using correlation coefficient, we can get a sense of how similar the horizontal and vertical pulses are behaving from pulse to pulse. Generally very high values of CC are from meteorological targets, and very low values of CC are from non-meteorological targets. We see here that the plume is made up of very low values of CC, so we can confirm that the returns on radar are not meteorological. Plus, KMDW reported a FEW layer of smoke (FU) at 500 feet, providing further evidence. snowstormcanuck
Well, we hit -20c (-3F) at Pearson. Looks like that thin layer of snow aided in the rad. cooling process. Ottawa Blizzard will be doing cartwheels when he finds out.

Interesting observation. And I don't think they've got much snow up that way. Maybe radational cooling wasn't a factor.

BowMeHunter
Ottawa has been under quality returns for quite a while now. would you rather have a quality 4" LES event this week or keep piling on some of the futility records. That's a tough one for me.. I'd prob hit the futility seeing its most likely going to be down the sewer drains early next week anyways.
Chicago WX
Drove through some nice snow, at times, from LAF to IKK. Decent sized fluffy flakes. Ground covering in some spots, mainly in Iroquois county.

I'd probably take the 4" of fluff (would pass on 4" of 8:1) Either way, 4" of LES is super rare so it probably won't happen.

wisconsinwx
Nice.. little dusting of powdered sugar on the dog turds out there to help find them. Yeah, has been some solid heavy flurries or extremely light pixie dust snow to keep things looking wintry.
