WOW!

Just experienced thundersnow for the first time! Incredible.

Figured the winds would be solid so I decided to head out to a good place to watch. Was raining at the time. All of the sudden I see a few flakes in the headlights. Then instantly it changed to a massive wall of snow/graupel mix! Car thermometer showed a 4 degree C drop in about 30 seconds. Wow! Then parked, headed out and saw lightning and thunder. All the while with some pretty awesome winds, gusting to 60-70 km/h at least.

What a night!

Here's a radar image of the thundersnow line. Beauty :D

I heard the thunder a little after 3am but I assumed it was just TSRA and didn't even get out of bed. Then this morning I noticed there was a touch of snow on the ground and I made the connection.

I'm a little shocked that this is your first time experiencing thundersnow. I know Toronto =/= Oakville, but here are the TSSN events I can recall.

There are probably a couple of episodes between 2001 and 2007 as well that I'm not remembering. But assuming you've lived in Oakville the last 10-15 years, you've probably heard TSSN before.

Some very impressive gusts across the area. Gusted to 60mph here and have had some power outages. Grand Haven had the highest with 67mph. sheesh

Wow 55mph at DTW. Temp hovered in the mid-40s through last evening actually completely melted my last snow pile in a shaded area of the backyard. Now my neighbor across the street is the only one Ive seen who has a snowpile left from shoveling Decembers snows. Everything else is 100% grass, just the old plow piles in parking lots. Hopefully I will not be able to say that in 24 hours.

Oh and yes, on what will be a brutal day with single digit wind chills...DTW will be able to log a high of 45F set just after 1am. HATE those days!

12am- 42F

01am- 44F

02am- 43F

03am- 39F

04am- 29F

05am- 25F

07am- 21F

08am- 20F

Last night's midnight high evens out last weekend where it spent nearly all day in the mid 60s, but a 9 pm cold front dropped temps into the 30s, shaving 20 degrees off the low that would have been set if the front slid through a few hours later.

It evens out in the end.

I remember your suggestion a while back that there should be some sort of  better way to calculate the "mean" temp than just high and low averaged. Thats true. To be fair though, for here it seems we ALWAYS have these midnight type of highs, way more than the situation you had last week in the 60s.

I would not be shocked if the low tonight is at 11:59 so today will balance out in that respect.

Nice list. I've only really been an active weather observer for a few years now, so this was my first experience. Very cool! Hope to see some TSSN again.

(also forgot to update my position back to Guelph, ON)
