Pretty Impressive Temperature Departures for Buffalo 2012

Obviously, one region does not prove much. Still, the departures are quite notable - look how Buffalo is likely to break the old record for warmest year by over a degree. Also note 4 out of the 5 warmest Buffalo winters (with 130 years of records) occurred in the past 25 years. Statistically, only one out of 5 would occur during this period if temperatures have not changed. Also, not likely any urban heat island effect given proximity to the lake and the fact that the population in the Buffalo area has actually been declining somewhat since the 1980's.

Here is the information issued by the NWS Buffalo office this afternoon:

2012 Will be Warmest Calendar Year at St. Louis and Columbia (Updated 12/25)

2012 Will be Warmest Calendar Year at St. Louis and Columbia...

Persistently warm weather has greeted much of the eastern three-quarters of the country in the year 2012, including the bi-state region. In fact, through December 24th, this year has been the warmest start to a calendar year on record at St. Louis, MO (KSTL), Columbia, MO (KCOU), and tied 7th warmest ever at Quincy, IL (KUIN). This record warmth thus far in 2012 was especially bolstered during meteorological spring (March - May) where the month of March at all three locations experienced record warmth. Summer was also well above normal, with all three sites in the top 10 warmest on record. Detailed lists of the top 10 warmest starts to a calendar year can be found below:
