Down here in the BX for the 1st part of the storm. Hopefully I get to enjoy the 2nd part with my NW crew :)

Snowing at a good clip here in the north Bronx. Roughly 3" otg here

Coming down good here in Monroe- would say we are at 4 inches right now. Hope we get in on some heavy banding tonight.

Have a safe trip back north. I ran out around 1pm to town and the roads were already pretty poor then. So your commute back will probably be a rough one. Hope you have your emergency road kit handy lol

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0124

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

0351 PM CST FRI FEB 08 2013

AREAS AFFECTED...SRN NEW ENGLAND...LONG ISLAND AND SRN NY...FAR NERN

NJ

CONCERNING...HEAVY SNOW

VALID 082151Z - 090145Z

SUMMARY...SNOWFALL RATES ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE MARKEDLY THIS

EVENING ...WITH RATES OF 1-2 INCHES PER HR OVER SRN NY/NERN NJ...TO

2-3 INCHES ACROSS SRN NEW ENGLAND. ADDITIONALLY...STRENGTHENING

WINDS MAY RESULT IN LOCALIZED BLIZZARD CONDITIONS...ESPECIALLY NEAR

THE COAST.

DISCUSSION...SFC OBS FROM 21Z CONTINUE TO REFLECT A RAPIDLY

DEEPENING OFFSHORE CYCLONE...WITH PRESSURE FALLS OF 3-4 MB/HR

OBSERVED. RADAR REFLECTIVITY MOSAIC SHOWS HIGHER PRECIPITATION RATES

ARE BEGINNING TO SPREAD INLAND ACROSS LONG ISLAND AND TOWARDS RI/SRN

MA/SRN CT. HOWEVER...SOME BRIGHT-BAND ENHANCEMENT MAY BE OCCURRING

AS MIXED P-TYPE OF RAIN AND/OR SNOW IS PREDOMINANT ACROSS LONG

ISLAND...WHERE SFC TEMPERATURES ARE CURRENTLY RANGING FROM 33-35 F.

INITIALLY...NEAR- OR ABOVE-FREEZING TEMPERATURES MAY SUPPRESS RATES

IMMEDIATELY ALONG THE COAST...BUT WITH LOW-LEVEL COLD ADVECTION

INCREASING AS THE CYCLONE TRACKS N-NE...A CHANGEOVER TO

PREDOMINANTLY SNOW IS EXPECTED WITHIN THE NEXT 2-3 HRS ACROSS MOST

OF THE HIGHLIGHTED AREA.

SNOWFALL RATES WILL BE INCREASING IN CONCERT WITH INTENSE ISENTROPIC

LIFT AND LOW-LEVEL FRONTOGENESIS WITHIN A DEFORMATION ZONE.

ADDITIONALLY...AN UPSTREAM SHORTWAVE UPPER TROUGH /LOCATED OVER THE

UPPER OH VALLEY PER 2130Z WATER VAPOR IMAGERY/ IS FORECAST TO PHASE

WITH THE OFFSHORE DEEP-LAYER CYCLONE. AS THIS OCCURS...THE

COMBINATION OF STRONG MIDLEVEL HEIGHT FALLS AND UPPER DIVERGENCE

WITHIN A COUPLED UPPER JET STRUCTURE WILL CONTRIBUTE TO INCREASING

DEEP-LAYER ASCENT. FORECAST MODEL SOUNDINGS SHOW A NEARLY SATURATED

COLUMN WITH A DEEP ISOTHERMAL LAYER LOCATED BENEATH THE DENDRITIC

GROWTH ZONE. THESE FACTORS WILL BE FAVORABLE FOR EXTREMELY HIGH

SNOWFALL RATES...ESPECIALLY FROM ERN LONG ISLAND INTO SRN NEW

ENGLAND...INCLUDING THE BOSTON METRO AREA...AS SUPPORTED BY THE

RECENT SUITE OF HIGH-RESOLUTION NUMERICAL GUIDANCE.

No doubt- as rough as it may be, it's fun if you have to be out in it- provided there are no issues on the commute.

I'm on my 3rd Audi over the years and the AWD Quattro is awesome, I swear by it - just as good as my Jeep.

Good fun!

Enjoy the snowy trek back!

Radar STILL looks like crap here in Sussex and it's STILL moderate snow.  5" so far.  Looks like we might get clobbered in the 9pm-3am band?

Yeah that is gonna be the main deform band.. I would think from Sussex,Passiac,Orange northeastward still looks on target for 12-16"

If you have at least 4" right now then 12" is def in your future. That band is crawling right now wait until it latches onto the coastal..

sorry man.  I know how you feel.  Lower Passaic County was the snowhole of the past 5 years.. literally...if you check out climatology, missed the deform bands 5 out of the last 5 biggies.

hopefully you cash in as phase two gets underway.

Phase I total bust here. 0.0 " not even a flake to be seen.

I'm in the eastern 1/3 of sussex county and we have been dry slotted for almost two hours with light snow/flurries.  I thought the snow in PA was going to come through about an hour ago but the dry slot is holding strong

I have seen this too many times in the past. I had the luck to be in this same situation numerous times in the past.  The storm will pull away the band out in PA will swing thought and drop 2 inches & its done.

Getting stuck between snow bands robs the energy in the shaft zone. I smell the dry air sucking the snow away:)

Going to be tough to get the lower end of the warning snow total predicted at this point I suspect imby.

Cheers,

Darkstar

RIPPING outside right now here on the range.  On a clear night, I can see High Point Tower.  On a 1/2 mile night, I can see Lake Wallkill.  On a 1/4 mile night, I can see the first tree where my landscaping ends.  For the past 45 minutes, I can't see that tree.

It is absolutely coming down outside right now!! Took me 2.5hrs to get home from the Bronx.

7" otg here & Heavy Snow :)

Same here- just pouring snow with winds kicking up. Just plowed the driveway- I would say we have 8 easy already and by time I was finished the driveway was covered again.

Hope it lasts to morning- any word on end time?

I would say a good 3-5hrs before it starts to die down. With these rates 3-5hrs can yield an additional 6-8"

Should be pretty sweet then. All in all a nice storm for sure.

Some of those guys in the NYC thread are not happy, to put it mildly.

That's why I always temper my expectations when it comes to snow.

I feel for them, but it's turning out great for us. Even if it ended now it still the best storm of the season so far.

But in the end it all melts and its just water lol

They act is if they control weather. they must be a blast to hang out with too.

I will take a final measure around 11:30-11:45 prior to bed.

Overall a solid storm. Hopefully a few more down the road.

Cheers,

Matt
