IsentropicLift
It's amazing how jealous some people are getting when we have snow and the coast doesn't. You would have thought they hadn't seen snow in years when in fact we're still coming off one of the most epic times ever in terms of big storms. The long range forecasts don't look too shabby either with plenty of storm chances even for the coast.

IsentropicLift
I would personally love to see us break off from the NY forum all together, but we just don't have enough posters out this way. If we did though we might steal some posters from the Philly forum and the NY/PA forum.

hudsonvalley21
Had around 4.25 on the ground when I left home around 5am. Had a nice ride being behind 2 snowplows riding side by side on 84 from KSWF thru Slate Hill. When I went thru Milford, they had a bit less on the ground. Here at work in Nazareth, Pa. and there is about a 1/2 of snow and a nice layer of ice on top.

nzucker
Only had 1.25" in Dobbs Ferry NY. Was interesting driving into the City for work and seeing the snow disappear so rapidly just south of the Bronx/Westchester border. Nothing had stuck once I crossed the Whitestone into Queens; Pelham Bay had a light coating in some spots. 32.7F currently after a high of 34.2F. Finally had a day that managed to hang around freezing, preserving the white landscape here in Westchester.

There was actually some solid snowcover underneath what fell today...at least on the northward facing slopes.

Pitmaster
Yup. There was actually some solid snowcover underneath what fell today...at least on the northward facing slopes. I use to hike that area as well- it's nice up there. I also get a permit every fall to hunt Sterling Forest- but there is also great hiking there where the Appalachian trail runs though. Elevation does get pretty high in places. It's really amazing that its only an hour from NYC that we have that terrain- and what a difference in the snow. I feel for the NYC crew getting shafted on these storms but they can get their snow fix by taking a short trip up this way.

It's a 30 min drive for me, so it's nice to be able to see some winter during the more average snowfall years. The year-to-year snowfall gradient is pretty incredible from around Route 202 in Mount Ivy to the Harriman State Park area. You wouldn't think the elevation of those small hills would do much, but it definitely tacks on a good bit of snow during the very marginal events like we saw today. Over an entire winter it tends to add up big. Great place, though. It's always empty and they keep the roads in great shape during the winter. Almost too perfect considering the kind of traffic those roads see. lol.

There used to be a map floating around on the net showing snowfall averages along the Appalachian trail. If I remember correctly it was pretty accurate for these parts. The difference just in Rockland is pretty incredible at times too. As a kid it always seemed the Spring Valley toll on the thruway was where the rain/snow line set up. From sparkill and piermont up through haverstraw and into the higher terrain of stony point has a huge difference too, especially for such a small county. Being on the border of so many events, my 500' has been huge lol.

I would think some parts average even more than 50" because I average around 38" per year in Dobbs Ferry at 350' elevation. Up above 1000' they probably get 55-60" since it's north and higher than here.

sussexcountyobs
50-55" sounds about right for highest spots in Harriman. Highest peak is Black Rock Mt. at 1280'. The average where I am on Wawayanda Mt in Vernon, Nj is 55", with isolated spots over 1400' averaging 55-60".
