How are official measurements taken? If you have 4.1 inches of snow that changes to sleet and compacts down to lets say 3.5. Which is the official measurement?

Take max snow depth right before switch. Clear the snow board and record the sleet like you would snow. If it were to switch back to snow, clear the board again at the switch. You can add the snow and sleet totals.

Using the 6 hour rule, it's ok to measure max snow depth within the 6 hours.. You just can't clear every hour because that will inflate totals.

If I'd cleared board every time it switched here I would basically been outside all day! Anyway, back edge of precip has passed by, had a heavy burst of snow swing through just before. Another 1.5 officially measured at 6 hour period including the sleet, storm total of 3.0 for here and 2.6 is on ground. If we'd stayed all snow probably been in 8 inch neighborhood.
