Russia's harshest winter in over 70 years

Recommended Posts

Eastern Europe is pretty mild now, and will be for the foreseeable future.  I'm in Prague, and the 10-day forecast has highs mostly in the 40s, with overnight lows never really going below freezing.  Moscow is a little colder than we-- they'll have some days that won't clear 20-- but nothing too bad for them.

Gotta love Ojmjakon...a cold lover's dream. :)

Keep in mind the temps at the link are in C...so the -58.6C temperature on 12/24/2012 is -73.5F.  Nice vodka cold.  Also, I like the 1063.7 mb pressure (31.41 in.) on 12/6/2012.

Not sure where else to put this, so:

December 2012 featured the greatest northern hemisphere snow cover extent on record (since 1966).  3 of the top 5 have been in the last 4 years: 2012, 2010, and 2009.  The other two were 1985 and 1970. All 5 Dec featured AO<0 and 4/5 (all except 1970) featured AO<-1.5.

Note that 3/4 of the following Jan (1971, 2010, 2011) and 4/4 (1971, 1986, 2010, 2011) of the following Feb featured above average N.H. snow cover.  Also note that 3/4 cases featured a -AO Feb.

Overall snow cover this Dec was above normal North America, but extremely persistent snow cover over northeast China and central Europe helped bring home the record.

Russia is enduring its harshest winter in over 70 years, with temperatures plunging as low as -50 degrees Celsius. Dozens of people have already died, and almost 150 have been hospitalized.

Yeah, but nature has a way of balancing itself.
