If heading to Eustis we'll go the back way through Madison and come out in Kingfield by Annies. Well, they did. Dad passed last winter and my mom sold the house. Numerous 50-70 mph wind gusts (125 mph on Mount Mansfield!) along the slopes with power outages, trees down, and minor damage to houses (siding, shingles ripped off). J.Spin Posted December 21, 2012 Share Posted December 21, 2012 In line with the 2.2” of new snow that I found at our place in the Winooski Valley this morning, Bolton Valley up above reported another 4” overnight in their snow report; that brings their 72-hour total to 10”, and their 7-day total to 19”, so it seemed like time to finally head up and see how things were skiing on the west slope. When I left the house (495’) it was a couple degrees above freezing and we were in that early morning precipitation lull, but by the time I hit Bolton Flats a couple miles to the west, the next wave was coming in, so I was hit with a barrage of wet snow and rain. Approaching the center of Bolton, there was essentially no snow on the ground at the base of the Bolton Valley Access Road (340’), but snowpack appears very quickly as you climb the road – just a couple hundred feet up from the valley bottom, a solid inch or two of snow was down on the ground. The base of the road is fairly protected, but as I got higher I could see that the winds were howling. With the strong winds I was keen to stay somewhat low, so my goal was to start a ski tour at the Timberline Base (1,500’) if the snow looked sufficient. The temperature at that elevation was right around the freezing mark, but snow was falling with plenty of intensity – when I had my skis out on the ground while I was getting ready, they were covered with a few tenths of an inch of snow in just a few minutes. The wind gusts were strong, certainly 20-30 MPH, and I actually had to head off into the trees a few dozen yards away when I realized that one of my gloves had been stolen and carted off by the wind. Indeed there’s plenty of snow down at Timberline now for earned turns; right behind the Timberline Lodge I measured depths anywhere from 5 to 18 inches depending on wind, with a couple inches of that being new. That bottom number seemed to increase a bit as I went higher in elevation. The snow was dense down at the Timberline Base, but it dried out as you increased in elevation – by the 1,700’ or 1,800’ elevation it was already noticeably drier. There’s definitely not enough base yet to open terrain to lift-served traffic down at that elevation, but it’s getting close. The snow that’s down there is dense, so one good dump with an inch or two of liquid equivalent would have it there. On that note, it’s not surprising that the upper mountain above 2,000’ does appear to have enough snow to open natural terrain, because I see that the resort has opened numerous natural snow trails now, including several black diamond runs on the upper mountain. That is a very good sign that snow depths are substantial up there. powderfreak Posted December 21, 2012 Share Posted December 21, 2012 4-6" on Mansfield and has switched to rain at the base and freezing rain at summit. Never experienced winds that strong before...to the point of having trouble breathing if you faced it head on. I've never seen locals here head for cover but some of those gusts above 3500ft were knocking folks back. Easily 80mph or higher. I'll remember today...lifts are running due to sheltered on the east side but any terrain exposed to the south seemed to be getting sustained hurricane force wind. Drifts to like 5 feet in spots from 4-6" of snow, lol. Almost two feet above 2500ft this week and we opened like 30 trails today. Up to 71 now, half of them on natural snow. And the sun's been out a few times! Sweet! Yeah that 125mph on Mansfield seems in line with winds practically knocking over adult humans, lol. Watch out for flying rime ice. We'd usually take that from our place in belgrade lakes towards norridgwock, but eventually just took 27 all the way to rt 2 then went east. That makes sense - I hadn't considered a starting point near Belgrade Village. Windblown rain and mid 40s now in AUG. Still snow under the pines across Hospital Street, but the lawns here are bare, except for puddles. Can't wait to see the 4-5" of slush masquerading as my driveway, some from this morning's snowburst but most being what the snowblower couldn't scrape up. After hearing of 70 mph gusts in Jericho we drove there and caught a double rainbow as skies cleared out for a bit. Rain and precip was being blown well out from the clouds to the south and west. When we got to Jericho the winds were not nearly that strong at the point. However near Essex and Essex Jct. there were some 50-60 gusts. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
