Dec 24th 1966 :snowing:

The Donner & Blitzen storm ruled...especially in CT...with 6 to 8 quick inches...t-storms with snow too, IIRC.

Its cool that you can point to the single event that turned you into a weather fan...I know...as I can do the same.

Re-checking...looks like the axis of heaviest snowfall went from Port Jervis / Pike County, PA through the Catskills and up into the Capitol District...with a localized secondary maximum up near the Tug Hill Plateau.  7.1" in the Park.

Yep that storm did it..after that storm I was hooked on weather and especially snow. And it was a bonus that a after a mild January,Feb and March 67 were blockbuster winter months

At least you New Yorkers have historically and geographically a better chance than I do in Florida for a White Christmas, albeit a very, very slim this year for NYC and vicinity.  We only see fake snow at Disney Parks and Universal Studios :). Here's Where NOAA Thinks We'll Have A White Christmas with credit to Andrew Liptak:

fz4k81szqsuybdf0cm4h.png1

Dreaming of a white Christmas? NOAA released a graphic that charts out the probability that you’ll have some snow on December 25th, based on historical norms.

I don’t know about you, but looking at my Facebook ‘Memories’ feature, and I’m seeing that on this date over the last couple of years, we’ve had snow on the ground, a lot of it. I’m holding out hope that we’ll get some before too long.

NOAA’s graphic shows the “climatological probability of at least 1 inch of snow being on the ground”:

This map is based on the 1981–2010 Climate Normals, which are the latest three-decade averages of several climatological measurements. This dataset contains daily and monthly Normals of temperature, precipitation, snowfall, heating and cooling degree days, frost/freeze dates, and growing degree days calculated from observations at approximately 9,800 stations operated by NOAA’s National Weather Service.

Quote from Earthlight & New York Weather :)

Dreaming of a White Christmas? Dream On December 14, 2015/in Short Term Forecast /by John Homenuk

It has been a meteorological winter of mud, rain, and warmth.

Two full weeks in to the meteorological winter season, which begins December 1st and ends March 1st, no winter weather of significance has impacted our area. That, in itself, isn’t all that notable. December of 2014 also featured above normal temperatures and very little winter weather. 2015, however, has been much more notable on almost all facets — with record shattering warm temperatures and prolonged above normal temperature departures.

On Saturday and Sunday of this past weekend, daily high temperature records were broken at almost all of the NYC 5-Boro’s weather reporting stations. New York City (Central Park) broke their daily high temperature record on Sunday before the clock even reached 10:30am. Central and Southern New Jersey? Forget it: Temperatures there soared into the lower 70’s, breaking records as well...

There was a really nice storm on 19 - 20 December 1995 with 8 - 15 inches across the area.   LGA was close to the jackpot, IIRC.

I definitely remember that event very well and the 3-4 events before it. I think we had a white Thanksgiving that year too. For some reason tho I remember seeing actual snow falling on Christmas night. I think it snowed on Valentine's Day in 1996 too.

Nice video, thank you. I knew I wasn't crazy lol. Those small events that year seem to go unnoticed. I wonder if anyone has any radar archives from those smaller events.

stinks when Xmas is not white, very disappointing but it is worse when Xmas or the EVE are wet=ugh

It does but it still beats last year by several miles. There's still some snow otg here but more bare spots than snow cover.

I'm still holding out hope that tonights minor event somehow trends colder.

I know, like many here I need a good checkup from the neck up.
