WeatherFox
Well, there are seven days to Christmas and it does not look promising for us New Yorkers to experience a White Christmas. Temps look to be colder but will there be a precipitation threat outside side of snow flurries or snow showers? As of now the answer is no for NYC. People in the north and west have more of a chance. Attached is the Weather Channels broad brush view of the probabilities.
uncle W
besides the Yankees being in the world series every year in the early 1960's NYC got five straight Christmas's with at least some snow on the ground Christmas morning...1966 being the benchmark and 1961 and 1963 a close second...1959, 1960 and 1962 were the other years with snow on the ground Christmas morning...2009 and 1995 are the recent white Christmas's we have seen... Storm At Sea
Back in the mid 1990's, the lightest, finest snow fell on Christmas night and coated everything. It was a very cold night as I remember and the overall scene (when almost everybody had Christmas lights/displays) was as pictureque as they come. Hands down, it was better (in my book) than any 10 inch. event despite only receiving 1/2 inch. There is something magical about Christmas snow. It also seems like we've been having fewer minor events (dusting to inch, etc) recently. Back in the late 1990's, it was normal to have several dustings leading up to Christmas. Isotherm
2009 was the best white Christmas in my memory. I had a 20"+ snowstorm on Dec 19th-20th, and the snowpack remained deep up through Christmas w/ 7-8" on the ground in the morning. A rainstorm washed it all away Christmas night, but by that point who cares.

Absolute Humidity
1995 was nice, had 3 - 5" on the ground from the dec 17, 18 and 19th snow to sleet to snow fest. On Christmas Day, light snow fell during the afternoon into the evening with around 1/2 " total. It covered all the crusty remains from the previous week and made the land scape look spectacular. I remember telling my niece, 7 years old at the time to cherish it as she may have to wait decades before she sees snow fall on Christmas Day. Thankfully I was wrong. She only had to wait 7 years. WeatherFox
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK NY 357 PM EST WED DEC 19 2012 ...IT LOOKS LIKE THE LOW OFFSHORE OF THE PACIFIC NW EJECTS A PIECE OF ENERGY INTO THE UPPER MIDWEST LATE SUNDAY NIGHT. THIS ENERGY DIGS QUICKLY INTO THE OHIO RIVER VALLEY BY LATE MONDAY NIGHT. IN RESPONSE...A LOW AT THE SURFACE FORMS AND WILL TRACK NEAR OR JUST SOUTH OF LONG ISLAND ON TUESDAY MORNING...WITH THE GFS BEING THE QUICKER SOLUTION. AT THIS TIME...THICKNESS AND SURFACE TEMPERATURES SUPPORT SNOW FOR THE ENTIRE AREA IF THE BULK OF THE PRECIP FALLS OVERNIGHT MONDAY NIGHT INTO TUESDAY MORNING. IT IS A QUICK MOVING SYSTEM AND DOES NOT LOOK LIKE IT WILL PRODUCE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF QPF. THIS WILL HAVE TO CONTINUE TO BE MONITORED. MJO812
Here is the wave that I am talking about for Christmas Eve into Christmas. It's not going to add up to much but maybe a dusting would be nice on the ground for Christmas. Upton for my area . Monday Night A chance of snow showers. Partly cloudy, with a low around 28. Chance of precipitation is 40%
PB GFI
A white xmas is a white xmas , and a coating doesn`t impede traffic or travel that much . but will still go down in the record books as a white xmas .. And just maybe its the sets up of where the baroclinic zone could wind up for the following system if it does decide to cut through the Ohio Valley and not punch its ticket to Chicago . chietanen
I spent the first 20 years of my life in Buffalo, so I never really had to dream of a white Christmas! I moved in '98, but was home for Christmas in 2001. The lake effect that year caused my family and I to leave town on Christmas eve, just before more than 6 feet of snow fell over the course of 5 days! I have pictures of some family members shoveling with snow banks easily exceeding 8-10 feet! Sad to have missed that event! I was living there for the 24 hour record snowfall of 38" (in 1995 I believe) though. It's funny, now I get excited to see 2 or 3" of snow! WeatherFox
Today's 12Z GFS teases the NYC area with a period of light snow early on Christmas day. Could be a dusting to an inch, a touch of a White Christmas and a prelude for more significant SNOW, hopefully in the days that follow.
