Stumbling into a wintry pattern, weenies confused; still shaken from last winter

It's terrible how all the cold for this morning and the next week will probably go to a waste. NYC may even have December end without receiving any measurable snow. Any December with snowfall under 3" will probably lead to a well-below-normal snowfall for winter. It's looking increasingly likely tha NYC will end up with less than 10" for this winter, given the breakdown of the pattern after next week. Unfavorable tropical forcing and a remaining cold upper stratosphere will nail the coffin for us. Man, this winter reminds me of last winter in so many ways; however, we actually had more below-32* readings last December at this time. So the non-winter of 2012-2013 continues like 2011-2012 did for eternity.

Well get used to it then, the globe is warming, we're probably going to have winters soon without any snow at all. In the past even when the pattern wasn't perfect, the cold air in place was much stronger than it is now and we manage to get snow, but now if the pattern isn't perfect, then we get nothing.

I couldn't agree more twccraig if it's not going to snow.. Bring on the 60's. would love to know what happend to our big pattern change I just don't call below normal temps for five days a huge pattern change. I thought everyone was saying how cold Jan was going to be meanwhile now we're hearing more and more about torching after the first or secound week of Jan!!!!!!!!

I cringe every time I read that on a weather board.

Agreed, what the heck has happened to this group. It's akin to telling a friend, "Oh, I only like you on the days you bring me presents and do stuff for me. If you're going to be useless to me, just get out of my house." That's what they're telling old man winter. If you can't bring me snow, I don't want your coldness; just get lost. Tsk tsk tsk, disappointing, very disappointing.

I'll rephrase that a little.. Cold is good but can't stand when it's just cold for two days then rains then we get cold again and warm up again just intime for the next storm to bring us rain just very annoying I just think of cold and snow when I think of winter....

It's not really about global warming. I expected this winter to be very different than last winter based on the mets on this board. However, the end result is almost exactly the same. MJO in the COD to entering Phase 4, -PDO with dominating -PNA, cold upper stratosphere, and the lack of an El Nino for three straight years. To top it off, we are getting Day 7+ model teases with fantasy arctic air and snowstorms, one of the warmest Decembers on record, storms that are either too far west or east and having an early November snowstorm being the holder for the most snow received in the entire winter. Having said all that, I wonder why Don S. in the main forum continuously states that this winter will not come close to last winter at all. And why have we been in Storm Mode for more than three days?

This post is a little misleading...to say the least.
