Forum Members Map

For a few years now I've maintained a map that shows the members of the Southeast sub forum. This year I'm trying a little something new and started over. This is done using google maps and fusion tables which can be seen here:

https://www.google.com/fusiontables/embedviz?viz=MAP&q=select+col1+from+1Ym6wrmsblsUik3kZzGlSqj12W4MJjOzYWumbUBM&h=false&lat=34.706196585158274&lng=-82.21305000000001&z=7&t=1&l=col1&y=2&tmplt=2

One of the reasons I'm doing this is to help visualize for those making forecast maps with where the majority of our members are. The other reason is just because it's neat to see what locations make up this forum. So my question is, would there be any interest in a map like this for the entire forum?

Keep in mind I'm not a map maker, this is just something I've done in my spare time. So if you think there is a better way to do this by all means let me know. The other thing that can be done with this data is to make a heat map to perhaps help those making a blog post to again help target specific areas with the most members there.

We have something like this for the C/W forum as well (https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=207989631584805411892.0004b4532778a5456b07d&msa=0&ll=37.020098,-102.832031&spn=40.171534,79.013672)

. I think it is a great idea. I would love to see a forum wide member map.

Yea originally for the SE forum I had a setup like this but moved to fusion tables as it's just easier to work with the data...but it sort of limits what you can do (like setting up boundaries etc..) that you could normally do having a custom map in google maps. Using the table method also allows you to make heat maps which I just love for some reason. Here is what the heat map looks like for the SE crew..

Once you get a lot of data it looks much better and can really help pin point where the highest population is in relation to this forum.

Anyways I'll start formulating a plan to do something forum wide.

A heat map would definitely be cool. I know this is probably super difficult, but it'd be fascinating to see if you could make a heat map and then compare it to an actual population heat map to see which areas have more or less members relative to their respective populations.

Both are actually not too difficult using Open Heat map and can be done in fusion tables as well but that is more complicated (though interactive)...I'm just still learning the ropes.

I like, other than the use of red :)

I'll keep that in mind. I remember I didn't put more than 10 minutes into it.

Cool. I'm assuming that you did that based on people who show where they live. I know there are many who don't do that for whatever reason or another. Too bad that some folks leave that info off.

The data was collected via ColdFront77, the board statistician in May of this year. We probably have a hundred + new members since this spring.

I'm OCD when it comes to colors.

Could be fun to do a county based map instead of state based. May show population density better.
