It definitely makes sense that for the most part, the gradient in snowfall was west to east as opposed to north to south, considering the relatively strong ENE flow in the boundary layer. Although the surface winds were light, the winds just above were pretty strong, creating a thicker warm layer than some of us anticipated near the surface.

My 85 year old grandfather, who had talked about the advent of Hurricane Sandy for the past 20 years, also always speeks of the I-287 snow/rain line. He was spot on today...I-287 seemed to be a good demarcation for this event. Hillsborough did in fact receive approx. 3-4 in. Once south of I-287, it quickly and I mean quickly went to just patches of snow (FWIW, it snowed pretty good south of there, but snow was melted by a good pelting of rain at around 12PM).

Crazy and in the elevated locations of NW Bergen 4 inches of snow accumulated. Very cool stuff.

I guess it is a pretty cool phenomenon but if you live in my town and are a snowhound like me then it kind of sucks lol. Some cars do have snow on them but nothing noticeable on the roads, grass, rooftops or trees.

That's nuts. I was in Bogota today (a whole 2 miles to your west and lower in elevation) and there was a solid inch on most surfaces at one point.

That ob site has been known to be questionable for 20 years. Yet NWS keeps including their totals in the PNS.

I actually complained to nws couple of years ago about this and got a thoughtful response that others have complained about the west milford obs.....yet as you said they still keep including them. Sometimes near upper greenwood lake the elevation of 1000 feet or so does make a big difference but often times, especially in big storms, west Milford and the next town over, ringwood, will have the same exact snow totals and west Milford will report 4-6" more snow.

Ringwood and West Milford rarely have the same snow totals - although neighboring towns , the elevation difference is dramatic and the cutoff is always extreme. I know it seems suspicious but trust me on this one.

My buddy did have 5.5 up the mountain which is about 15 miles northwest of me in same town so maybe NWS observer is up the mountain.

West Milford definitely snow spot. East enough to get in heavier precip in nor'easters and elevated

I do believe they could of had 5-6 yesterday because they had a heavy band early in the morning that have then that extra inch.

But Plenty of surround towns have equal elevation as west Milford , kinnelon, Jefferson , Vernon . If u are talking upper greenwood lake than they should be comparable to highland lakes . No doubt the higher spots do well in elevation storms but come on the same town is not always going be the jackpot for every storm. They should give the elevation of this PNs report . West Milford is a big town, and this report wasn't called in by the guy I know Who lives at 1100 ft. What time did u measure your snow by the way? Yours seems low actually. If u measures after 3 it's most likely to low because it really started to compact and melt by than and u were probably closer to 4.

The Mt. Holly PNS has a couple 5" reports from Morris. One is listed at 900 feet.

If I lived in West Milford, I'd try to get my house built up at 1100 feet

Again you really have to know the area - even Kinnelon is a few hundred feet below us which makes all the difference with the during these things. Jefferson is always similar to us with totals. The issues with Vernon and Sussex are often times that they are sometimes too far west to get in those serious bands so West Milford usually better than them in coastals.

WM is 80 square miles. What people don't realize is the highest elevation is in fact not up the mountain in Upper Greenwood Lake but on Macopin Road closer to Kinnelon and Butler. In between is a deep valley near the center of town. That is why you receive so many different snow totals that make it seem suspicious.

Lived in the area for 40 years lol. I certainly know a lot about west Milford since I border it.. As for kinnelon smoke rise has some elevated areas over 1100 feet. Go check google earth .

I've lived her for 57 years - do not need to google anything. Have a good day.

Obviously U do. By the way i hope u realize nobody lives in those-highest peaks in west Milford that u are referring about (areas of 1486 ft). Highest inhabited areas are around 1200 ft in upper greenwood lake.
