I can't prove the Emporia one but I finally found a -50F or colder in Kansas. There may be possibly a couple more out there on certain dates but this is what I have been looking for. It has been six months. Wunderground has finally updated there site somewhat. I looked everywhere else and I could not find any other data. It either does not exist or does not exists on that day. In Iowa wind chills on the old scale were like 90 to 95 below on that day. Some areas may have even approached 100 below on the old scale in Iowa. That would be around -65F to -70F which practically corresponds to the -64F in Waterloo. That was a -92F on the old scale. The low was -26F and the high was -15F. Ouch!!!!!! I think that is Canton/Akron, Ohio coldest wind chill which comes out to be -53F(-73F old scale). Though Kansas has had some incredible days like Christmas Eve 1983 and December 1989 cold outbreak. Both outbreaks lasted for at least a week with subzero temperatures in some spots. I believe December 1989 likely had wind chills as cold as -50F it didn't have the winds like 1983 did but it did feature colder temperatures with some spots hitting -30F to -35F. Even 1982 and 1985 may have had possible wind chills around -50F in some areas. I kind of wonder if Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and some of the other nearby states may have matched Chicago's -60F wind chill from January 20, 1985. One thing I do remember at age 3-5 was the huge drifts and the cold somewhat. We sometimes got 8-12 inches in one day and it would accumulate and when the wind came along it blew it into drifts 5 feet tall. There also was to one day back in the 1980s where ice accumulations would be as much as 2 inches and leave a sheet of ice on the Kansas Turnpike. This also occured in 1998 and 2002 that even a 600 foot tower collapsed somewhere in Kansas. Yeah, for sure, but I think the Watertown, Iowa -64F wind chill on December 24, 1983 and the Canton/Akron, Ohio -56F wind chill are even more impressive. I also read a news article regarding the Oketo/Marysville -52F on December 24, 1983 and it supposedly got so cold even some ducks drank water and froze to death and hens froze solid on their perch. I can't find that article even though I just read it the other day. Also Williston had a -71F according to that metorologist in that news article. Are new articles evidence for wind chills. I read through some old newspapers from January 20-21, 1985 and wind chill factors in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio were as low as -85F on the old scale or around -60F on the new scale. Sorry about if the newspaper articles you may have to sign up to look at them and cancel within the first week or 30 days depending on the site. Kansas and Nebraska really got it in the December of 1989 arctic outbreak. Minus 30s in Northern,Kansas and -40s in Northern, Nebraska. The coldest temperature in Kansas was -34F at Atwood and the coldest temperature in Nebraska was -47F at Oshkosh. Both occurred on December 22, 1989. Additionally I found a temp of -26.2F with a 16.2 mph wind with a wind chill of -53.8F in far NW Cheyenne County Kansas at coordinate points 40.002, -101.97.
