CT Rain
December '89 was epic. The rest was horrific. Talk about a rubber band snap lol. Dec 1989 avg temp was 3.2 standard deviations below normal at BDL. Probability of that is like 0.065% assuming a normal distribution.

weathafella
December '89 was epic. The rest was horrific. You could see the trend the last few days of the month. Winter shot its load and couldn't come back in the age prior to Viagra. I remember a February spell in 1989...the winter prior. I was in LA and heading at 6am to work in Santa Barbara one Monday. The Ventura Freeway had some ice in the median which in itself was crazy! I woke up at 5 Tuesday morning for a 10 mile run with temps in the mid 20s. Midweek produced a widespread snow event that brought several inches to the San Fernando Valley. Soon after I realized I had to come back home to snow. 2 years later I was back in sne for winter and have been here since.

moneypitmike
lol talk about cold My one recollection of that month.......I was living in my first solo apartment after college in the Bronx. A real sh*thole place, but as a 22-year old just starting out, I thought it great. The memory from hell is that we ended up losing our heat and hot water for 3 days. I remember going to a friend's apartment for meals. At bed time, I'd cover my bed with as many blankets I had and throw all my sweaters over that. I'd wake up each morning with the hope that perhaps the heat had come out. I'd stick my head from under the covers, see my breath and immediately recognize that the interior freeze was continuing. I'd then jump in for a two second shower and wash my hair with water I'd heated on the stove. Maybe that's why I wear my shawls these days..... The weenie in me wants to see me cash in come the first week of December. With that gradient pattern forcasted by the ensembles it reminds me of Dec 2007 when we had several of those SWEFS/overunning events.

Fortunately that winter I was in a condo that had the electric bill included in our rent and electric heat... we cranked it. I did work outside that year during winter break at a fish hatchery. That was cold. The next 3 years, however, I was in a crappy apartment that we never could pay for the oil heat, so we used the gas stove (heater box) and a few electric heaters. Plastic on the windows, etc. I froze. Sometimes I stayed with other friends so I could be warm PS Same building as MarkO...

Somehow we managed to pay for cases of NH bought Milwaukee's Worst beer, but not heat... strange. Back then, the only supermarket (using that term VERY loosely) we had in the area was this horrilble place called "Modern Food" (apparently, none of us residents in the Bronx wanted old food). One year when I was at Fordham, they were offering "Milwaukee" beer (no, not Milwaukee's Best. Just plain "Milwaukee"--plain white cans and black lettering). They were selling for $5 a case during spring weekend.
