That 85 airmass was the real deal. Those record/really low temps weren't achieved with anything close to optimal radiational cooling. It was super cold air advection at work.

There was a pocket of -30C air over LAF around the time of that observation. Combine that with snow cover at the coldest time of the year and crazy things can happen. Another good ob from that event... -13F with light snow on the evening of the 19th...probably one of the coldest temps with snow at LAF.

Nice...I was only 10 years old at the time. I wish I would've remembered that day!

I will never forget that day. At like 7:00 AM I had to walk from my apartment all the way across campus to get to the weather department to post the day's weather maps. I became sick soon after that!

-17º (-43º WC, -58º on the old scale) at about the time I usually headed out for my first class back on Jan 18, 1994.

Ouch. My walk that day would've been Harrison Hall to EE...alas, didn't have to make it that day with classes cancelled. We did walk to Mackey that night to watch Purdue and IU play. Big Dog era...had to. Of course it was -20º at 8am the next day on my walk to class. Never will forget it.

Feb 2, 1996 was the coldest day I can remember. The high for the day was only -11, but that actually happened at midnight. The daytime high was only -14! It was still -20 at 11am, and -18 at noon. It got down to -27 the next morning. A couple years ago (2008 or 2009) we hit -32 here in Erie. That was the coldest morning temp I ever felt, but the temps that day warmed up higher than this day back in 1996

I really dont understand METAR's very well...but my favorite off the top of my head, obviously most recent memory, is DTW's 7pm obs from Feb 20, 2011

METAR KDTW 202353Z COR 08009G15KT 1/8SM R04R/2400V4000FT +TSSN FZFG OVC006CB M02/M03 A2988 RMK AO2 TWR VIS 1/2 TSB47PLB04E18 SLP127 OCNL LTGIC ALQDS AND OHD TS ALQDS AND OHD MOV E P0016 60054 T10221028 10000 21022

In lamens terms the obs was:

28F

Heavy Thunderstorms and Snow

Visib 0.06 mi

This METAR seems longer than some of the ones you guys posted, can anyone explain it for the METAR-illiterate like myself lol?

I was in that blinding snow, vivid lightning, and crashing thunder...took me by surprise, and though I have experienced thundersnow several times, the thundersnow of March 4, 2008 and February 20, 2011 was unreal, it sounded as violent as a strong summer thunderstorm.

December 31, 2010. I was driving through varying ground blizzard conditions in Nebraska. The snow was not sticking to the road. It was like patches of fog moving at 35mph. Sometimes I could see only about 20 ft in front of my car. It was 5 degrees in Ogallala Nebraska, with 35mph wind gusts as a headwind. It was almost like being on a different planet, or the South Pole, or something. It wasn't too scary. But the smallest amount of ice or slippery and/or thick snow on the road, and I would have been very scared.
