-17º (-43º WC) at about the time I usually headed out for my first class back on Jan 18, 1994.

1994 is the only time I can recall getting off school due to the cold. Of course I wasn't in college then.

Hey Tim, do you remember what day LAF had that ridiculous 85 or 86 degree dewpoint?

No. But I'm looking right now.

EDIT: found it. July 27, 1997. Has to an error though. HI would've been 131º with the temp at 97º.

I really dont understand METAR's very well...but my favorite off the top of my head, obviously most recent memory, is DTW's 7pm obs from Feb 20, 2011

This METAR seems longer than some of the ones you guys posted, can anyone explain it for the METAR-illiterate like myself lol?

I was in that blinding snow, vivid lightning, and crashing thunder...took me by surprise, and though I have experienced thundersnow several times, the thundersnow of March 4, 2008 and February 20, 2011 was unreal, it sounded as violent as a strong summer thunderstorm.

Ha, that's awesome. Seems a little hard to believe but dewpoints were in the upper 70s/low 80s before that and it appears there was a front moving in based on the obs, which could've resulted in some moisture pooling. It's really hard to get an ob like that unless the sensor is in the middle of a corn field or it just started raining.

Was gonna post the 107mph wind from Moline, but Hoosier beat me to it.

An 80 degree dew with a triple digit temp is always interesting. July 13, 1995 in Moline the heat index reached 122 with a 100/80 reading. Pretty impressive for an in town ASOS.

It has a lot of remarks, basically concerning the TSSN (beginning time, movement, etc) Wunderground has a decent METAR tutorial: http://www.wundergro...om/metarFAQ.asp

55º to 33º in one hour, or 38 minutes, on January 28, 2009. Winds gusted to 54 mph as the intense front rolled through. Observations from 6:16pm to 6:54pm that night.

One of my personal favorites of all time from DTW, simply because it came out as "Heavy Thunderstorm Rain Fog Squalls and Windy" on the DTX observation page.

This was May 23rd, 2004 at 6:54PM EDT:

METAR KDTW 232254Z 23026G68KT 1/2SM +TSRA FG SQ FEW005 BKN027 OVC044CB 19/18 A2970 RMK AO2 PK WND 22068/2247 TWR VIS 4 TSB00RAB09 SLP054 CON LTGICCG S-SW AND OHD TS SW-W AND OHD MOV E P0095 T01890183 RVRNO

The rain was absolutely torrential as well. I actually remember a seperate severe event when a Derecho hit the area on the 21st, and it produced rainfall rates in excess of 6" an hour. Luckily, the storm moved at such a violent forward speed it only dropped about an inch of rain or so, but it's no surprise that this was the wettest May ever in Detroit with all of the severe weather events that occured that month.

Hoosier: I can't believe LAF was -18F at noon that day...crazy.

That 85 airmass was the real deal. Those record/really low temps weren't achieved with anything close to optimal radiational cooling. It was super cold air advection at work.

There was a pocket of -30C air over LAF around the time of that observation. Combine that with snow cover at the coldest time of the year and crazy things can happen. Another good ob from that event... -13F with light snow on the evening of the 19th...probably one of the coldest temps with snow at LAF.
