ago4snow
Surprised to hear Tom Skilling say that only 7% of the U.S. has snow cover versus 30% this time last year. I didn't realize the difference was so great considering how warm we were last year.

ago4snow
Not familiar with the normal snow cover in Canada this time of year, but it looks very impressive on the map. Just eyeballing it makes me think we're setting up a tremendous temperature gradient for storms traveling west to east in a zonal flow.

Just eyeballing it makes me think we're setting up a tremendous temperature gradient for storms traveling west to east in a zonal flow. Another item of notice is that the snow depth in the high terrain of the west is above last year, but overall coverage is down. Of course that's thanks to the relatively warm but very moist Pacific storms which have been hitting lately.

mcwx
Chances of some lt. frz. rain overnight? Last time I saw the forecast, I had a 20% chance of rain for Friday. Now it's 70% chance w/ freezing rain possible. That, unfortunately, will change my plans tomorrow.
Voyager
That freezing rain is not welcome. My wife just had knee surgery and is supposed to go to her first physical therapy tomorrow morning at 10:30. A nice glaze on the sidewalk will certainly kill those plans. Parsley
This front draped across the region this weekend will provide forecasting headaches. New 0z NAM just dropped highs Sunday nearly 20 degrees (low to mid-40s vs. low to mid-60s) from the 12z run earlier today.

Saturday's been taking a beating as well...a couple of NAM runs had 65 suggested...now mid 50's for PHL.
Voyager
Well, it appears the ice is only accruing on cars and other colder surfaces and not the streets or sidewalks...even though the temp is only 30 this morning. That's a good thing for my wife's trip to physical therapy this morning.

wederwarrior
A little slippery on the back roads this morning. Had my windshield ice over while driving, before I could blast it with the heat. It was a little scary for a moment.

tombo82685
-epo, but otherwise, yes If we had a -epo with -nao i think that would offset the -pna. I think 09-10 was dominated by a -pna but their was a -epo.

tombo82685
oh, right, -epo = cold. And trough east? You don't need all those indices to be like that, but it does help...you can get snow from a -nao, -pna, -epo pattern

Though, it was coupled with a west based -nao block and -epo i think.
