NortheastPAWx
Every summer it's the same damn thing. Warm/humid for a day or two, run-of-the-mill storms, cool/not humid, warm back up, run-of-the-mill storms, cool down, etc etc etc. Summertime in this part of NEPA is boring. Honestly, so very little interesting happens. I'm not wishing for destruction or anything, but I would like something more than just this dead cycle with storms that produce nothing more than a little rain and 30mph winds. Heisy
Hey guys, couple questions... As a snow maniac I have always wanted to move to a place that gets a ton of snow. I live, and have always lived in Philadelphia. When it comes to Lake Effect snow, I understand there are places that get 100-200" of snow a year, but does this snow come in 3-6" type bursts, or are big storms common 1-2'. What are the best locations in PA/NY as well? I guess on one hand it is kind of good that I don't see that much snow, because when it does snow in Philly it is all that more awesome, but on the other hand, I'd love to experience LES snow like you guys had yesterday at least once in my life. Thanks!
Santa Clause
If you are into a bunch of 2 to 4 and 3 to 6 events NW PA and NC PA would be good for you, but if you like the home run hits, you're better off sticking with Philly.

Philly averages probably 23" or so. I believe north central PA gets close to 40", if not more, so based on snow alone, I'd easily choose a place like Williamsport over Philly. Thanks! Head to Somerset or Cambria Counties, or the LES snow belts. The Laurel Highlands get over 100" from upslope and Lake snow every year, and the snow belts get pounded regardless. The Poconos have snow from Noreasters without the rain/snow line problems, SE PA has its boom and bust cycles, and the rest of the state usually has nickel and dime events sans the rare March 1993 type storms. That's PA in a nutshell. Besides the eastern 1/4 of the state, the snow from Noreasters is pretty sparse and the rest comes from upslope, lake effect, clippers, or what upper low and back end snow comes around. SWFE storms can drop some snow on the front before the sleet and freezing rain take over.

NortheastPAWx
What the actual f**k, a deepening storm just east of ACY and we still can't get more than 1-3"? Why is every big storm a joke around here anymore?
Santa Clause
I'm sure it's the path it takes or the way it projects to the BM from OBX but any way out of it we end up with very little. I'm guessing we need an almost impossible path from PHL to ENY to get a big one.
NortheastPAWx
Copy/pasting out of the Central PA thread. Regarding the long-term trend of coastals fringing us. The thing of it is, it never used to be this way. I mean, thinking back to some of those more awesome blizzards and winters, these biggies would always be for all. 93, 96, PD2...they would dump big snows throughout the entire northeast. There'd be lesser totals here and there, but these coastals were largely so uniform. It never had to be that you had to be in some narrow area and/or along I-95 to avoid being cutoff so severely. It started with the 2006 blizzard and has hit with a vengeance since 2009-10 winter (The 2/10 and "Retrosnowicane" events of that winter aside). Now it's always the damn I-95 corridor getting everything and we sit scraping flurries. What the hell ever happened to uniform snowstorms? What did we do to piss off Old Man Winter so much that these historic fringe jobs are now the rule?
Santa Clause
I agree on the big ones, we wouldn't do as well in my neck but we still received 14 at the least in those events. Lately it seems it's shifted to where we can't sniff out more that 7 or 8 in an event and the events are driven much more by banding instead of a large precip. field. CoraopolisWx
A rep from PennDot was just on the phone with TWC. He said the last bad storm was back in 2007. Santa Clause
Well, we have light snow and a deteriorating radar, meanwhile reading that a few hours east there will be possibly one of the greatest snowfalls of all time. If it didn't happen every couple of years I'd be more bummed lol.

I generally don't get too worked up about missing out on a bigger storm, but it would be nice to at least feel like I lived somewhere that averaged significantly more snow than Philly or NYC. Historically, State College has averaged one >=12" snowfall every 2.4 years...not bad. We've had exactly one since early February 2004.
NortheastPAWx
Omg I cannot wait for the day that we get a CCB over us for 12"+ while NYC is stuck with 35 and rain. It's so damn pathetic how they whine over potentially being cut to 10-15" and then they get their 24"+ on the models back... are you f***ing kidding me? Some of those posters are spoiled children but Mother Nature buys them the toy they want just to stop them from crying while we sit here wondering what the hell we have to do (cure cancer? End world hunger?) to get in on a big one. Oh yeah not to mention all their traffic constantly crashing the server...

Santa Clause
We need some LSV folks in here, this winter they're in the same boat or worse than us. Time to get some stuff off of your chest and this is where to do it. Admit it, it makes you cringe when you see people disappointed they were dropped from 24 to 36 down to 18+ lol. Rick G
I am p8ssed that NWS BGM keeps throwing in that there isn't enough for an advisory. counties to the east and west have advisories and warnings but not Luzerne. the schools did the right thing, because the roads sucked Donkey doo today. I had a two hour delay and I am sure that we will not be here all day.

I still remember the blizzard of 2006 where we were forecast to get two feet in Albany the day before and ended up getting about two inches. I believe that was Central Park's biggest snow storm. What we need is another March 94 storm...27" in State College and 4" in NYC lol.

I'm 47 years old and I can only remember 5 storms where I've seen 15 inches or more. To say that 17 inches, in NYC no less, is hardly historic, is absurd... And THIS is exactly why I can't stand the fact that the NYC weenies are getting hammered yet again. You don't know how many times I've wanted to walk in there and tell the first poster I see complaining about being cut to "only" 14-18" forecasts to come out here and THEN you will know what it's like to get the shaft. Bet you won't hear them complain about a "hardly historic" near-20" event then! I'm thrilled that I'm getting 6+ from this storm, but man do I hate seeing those whining babies getting 2 feet in NYC. I hope this goes march 2001 on them and they get 3 inches. I'm not normally this vindictive over weather but I agree with you. jwilson
Well living here I'm fairly used to disappointment, but not even getting a coating when the NWS called for 4-6" not 24 hours ago is a pretty bad bust. Personally I figured my 1-3" call was safe, but even that forecast is going to fail. It looks like I'll be finishing out January with 6" on the season so far. I have little hopes for the stuff later in the week because the airmass still won't be cold enough for those of us in SWPA /NoWV. Also the indices look little different. Our only hope may be the Superbowl storm. Right now it is suppressed, but I don't expect it to stay that way entirely.
