Chicago WX
I think it's safe...any chance we had is slipping away. I guess next up is to see where we're at just after midnight to try to challenge the record for Jan 1. Just looking at the obs from late morning and nothing else, it looked like runaway warmth. But we could only get so warm with all the clouds and lack of sun/deep mixing. I could've done better but if my original call ends up being underdone by 2 degrees on a day where the high temp forecast was not easy, I can live with that. I got 55º right now, but I see LAF is still at 58º. I think the Jan 1 record of 56º is probably toast.
Chicago Storm
It's up to 55F here. The bigger snow piles are all that remains of what was a 9" snow cover.
OHSnow
57 here right now... 54 up at the airport. Just ridiculous for New Year's night and number-busting warmth (I think the forecast high was 49).

Chicago WX
Bump troll/praise time going back to late November, for this past December. Thought I'd get my inaugural thread here at American out of the way. I'm going to say 8-9" IMBY for Dec. Reasoning: none. Good call. I think i have another good year and another slow start. Going with 1.5" in December. Hopefully we won't have to contend with a -NAO/-AO/-EPO fail (the 2nd half of November sure did). Ouch. I am going with 6.7 inches for December. 5 of those will fall in one storm..it will be a good over running WAA event that will lay down a good 6-7 hours of moderate some times nearly heavy snow. Spot on. Time to put a fork in it...GFS shows nothing but pure boredom...maybe avg to above...no precip... wow still no snow Saukville told me winter is over after Dec 15th... He's already corrupting my brain. LSE December snowfall: 32.3" I always get screwed. Storms passing to my west, and now one that's in the neighborhood may pass to my south... in a La Nina year. *bah humbug* Unfortunately how things have played out for JLN it seems. I'll be the Ji of the midwest and cancel winter for ya. Literally.
daddylonglegs
Chicago- I just laughed at that! Crap was I wrong. Have to stop listening to Saukville... He'll corrupt your mind and your computer if you let him use it... . 30F here.. MKE sitting at 53F...
daddylonglegs
Too be fair... MKE hasn't even had winter yet... At least up near the lake. No wonder why BowMe went crazy and taken up drinking alcoholic beverages

Chicago WX
I still think we'll break, or at least tie, the record high at the airport here tomorrow. LAF always overachieves in these kind of set ups. LAF - Purdue Airport 12/31: 62º in 1965 1/1: 56º in 2000 Sun out here now this morning, maybe a run at 50º or more today. Shame that this torch will taint an overall pretty cold month, statistic wise. Well one out of two isn't bad I guess. Happy 2011 to the Eastern time zone folks. cyclone77
Earlier I was thinking we may have a flash freeze here tonight with the passage of the strong cold front, but with the southwesterly winds the temps have just steadily been dropping instead of crashing. We're just now getting down to freezing. The temps stayed warm enough through the evening to pretty much melt the remaining snow cover. Our 14" of snow from less than a week ago is now a muddy mess. With the exception of the remaining crust piles it looks like November again out there.

WEATHER ROUNDUP FOR INDIANA NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE INDIANAPOLIS IN 1200 AM EST SAT JAN 01 2011 LAFAYETTE 57 Happy new year to you too. Congrats on the record, although it's what I consider one of those asterisk non-diurnal jobs. It won't feel that warm by 5PM. We didn't come close here. FWA's record for 1/1 is 60 ('85) and we were only at 54 at midnight. You're record for this date was more obtainable, plus you've got the LAF heat island effect going for you. Also, thanks for the recap post. That's awesome.
