Yeah... another fantastic observation from the Co-Op with only 2.0" of new snow from that 24 hour period!

If 2" of snow fell, I must only be 10" tall. Look at the above photos (and J.Spin's report) and then look at that Co-Op report.

Usually it is wrong, but not often it is *that* wrong. That's only like 15-20% of what actually fell. Usually its at least capturing 50% of actual...

Clouds came in last night keeping us from getting too cold--made it down to 8F according to my thermo but I suspect that was yesterday morning after my obs.

Anyway, 17F now with light snow. Picked up 0.1" of new snow overnight/early morning...

And if November is any judge, we'll have more snow than last year but less than 2010/11.

2010: 1.4" for November, 121" for the 2010/2011 winter.

2011: 11.2" for November, 73" for the 2011/2012 winter.

2012: 5.6" for November, ?? for 2012/2013 winter.

Yesterday was pretty busy between a morning trip to Stowe and an evening showing of the Warren Miller movie in Burlington, but there was definitely a skiing and winter theme to the day. Anyway, I didn’t get to post my final numbers from the Thursday night event, so I’ve got them below along with yesterday morning’s observations:

Event totals: 4.4” Snow/0.24” L.E.

5:00 A.M. Waterbury observations (11/30/12):

New Snow: 2.6 inches

New Liquid: 0.10 inches

Snow/Water Ratio: 26.0

Snow Density: 3.8% H2O

Temperature: 10.4 F

Sky: Clear

Snow at the stake: 3.5 inches

According to that final round of observations, the snow lightened up a lot and fell down to around 4% H2O with the plummeting temperatures, and it was certainly skiing like some NVT fluff as seen in the pictures from adk and the pictures from Powderfreak.

I’ve added the storm totals summary map and text from BTV below:

With the conclusion of that event yesterday, I can pass along my final November precipitation numbers:

November totals: 6.3” Snow/1.79” L.E.

Snowfall was on the lean side by a few inches based on the averages calculated from my data set, but November snowfall can be quite variable, with some Novembers coming in with little if any snow (2006, 2009, 2010) so although low, this one would certainly fall into that middling camp thanks to this most recent event. Most notable is the November total liquid, which is the lowest monthly total I’ve seen here since I started collecting liquid data for CoCoRaHS a couple of seasons ago, and also the first time I’ve reported less than 2 inches for a month. Also of note was yesterday’s low temperature, which was 7.2 F, for the coldest and first single digits of the season here.

-SN varying in intensity from very small flakes to bursts of increased growth. Nice wintry feel to the morning, I am just ignoring the forecast for the next few days...lol. On that note it will be interesting tonight to see how long we hold onto the cold air, sometimes in this valley it can be much longer than surrounding areas.

Event totals: 0.1” Snow/Trace L.E.

I made my observations this morning at 7:00 A.M., and found a surprise tenth of an inch of snow on the snowboard. It was cloudy, but I hadn’t checked on the forecast and wasn’t quite sure where it had come from. It had probably fallen pretty recently though, because it quickly started snowing again and it’s ramped up in intensity. There’s already another half inch of snow on the snowboard, so December is getting kicked off with some accumulation and we’ll add a bit of new snow for turns today. I’ve added a shot of the BTV Composite Radar, with the latest relevant discussion from BTV below that:

01DEC12A.gif

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

AS OF 847 AM EST SATURDAY...EARLY UPDATE THIS MID-MORNING TO INCREASE POPS TO LIKELY FROM THE CHAMPLAIN VALLEY EASTWARD AS WEAK SHORTWAVE TROUGH MOVING THROUGH THE AREA HAS BLOSSOMED SNOW SHOWERS WITH SOME MINOR ACCUMULATIONS ALREADY BEING REPORTED. SHORTWAVE WILL EXIT THE REGION THIS AFTERNOON ALONG WITH BEST DEEP LAYER MOISTURE AND LIFT SO EXPECT THIS ACTIVITY TO WANE AFTER ABOUT 2PM OR SO. A QUICK DUSTIN TO AN INCH CAN BE EXPECTED THROUGH THIS TIME. OTHERWISE...CLOUDY SKIES TO PERSIST THROUGH THE DAY WITH TEMPS CONTINUING TO RISE INTO THE MID/UPPER 20S.

Details from the 7:00 A.M. Waterbury observations:

New Snow: 0.1 inches

New Liquid: Trace

Temperature: 19.0 F

Sky: Cloudy

Snow at the stake: 2.0 inches

Surprised the light snow came in so early here. Ground is dusted white already and the heavier stuff will come in later. Maybe we can pull out a couple of inches?

I actually love this kind of weather. Dark, gentle light powder snow all day. Welcome to the start of Meteorlogical winter!

19F light snow vis about 2-3 miles

I see me....That was on the 4th? and last lap of the day....skins had failed by that point...did you see the crew skiing down taking pics? Blue pants bright multi-colored shell (me)

Did you guys head down National? I saw a crew of four head down there (noted a yellow jacket) and was looking for cameras/photography because I figured that would be you guys, but didn’t see any obvious shooting going on. Fantastic snow though – at least relative to what I’ve skied so far this season.

Not to get too far OT in this thread, but I hear you on the skins – that first shot up Midway was none too shallow and I had RT-86 skins (127-86-113) on my AMPerages (139-115-123) and there was way too much base showing. I was struggling as soon as I hit that steep pitch of Midway.

Needed a short hike today and Mt Chocorua fit the bill. The forecast had snow starting in late afternoon, but as I left the house at 5:30am it was already snowing lightly. Arriving at the trailhead it was still snowing but I could see Chocorua's summit, so while long distance views were not in the cards I was hopeful that mid-distance views could be had. As it turns out the snow intensity increased - vis dropped to a mile or less and the immediate summit was in the clouds. Alas. Still, there is tons of scenery to be had on the hike as Chocorua is quite picturesque in its own right. Snow depth up high was only around an inch with some drifting in areas.. I pulled out the Kestrel atop Middle Sister and got a temp reading of 15°, a wind of 15mph and a wind chill of -2F.

we've done chocoura and I think it rivals most views in the Whites.
