900 AM EST MON NOV 5 2012

...PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT...

...DUAL POLARIZATION RADAR UPGRADE FOR WSR-88D KRAX BEGINS TODAY...

WSR-88D KRAX...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR LOCATED

IN CLAYTON NC...AND OPERATED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN

RALEIGH...WILL UNDERGO MAINTENANCE TO INSTALL DUAL POLARIZATION

TECHNOLOGY BEGINNING TODAY. NO RADAR DATA FROM KRAX WILL BE

AVAILABLE BEGINNING THIS MORNING...AND LASTING UP TO 10 DAYS WHILE

THE RADAR IS OFF LINE AND INOPERABLE FOR THIS UPGRADE.

THE FOLLOWING NEIGHBORING DOPPLER RADARS WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE

COVERAGE OVER CENTRAL NC DURING THE UPGRADE: THE 88D WEATHER

SURVEILLANCE RADARS AT WAKEFIELD VA (KAKQ); BLACKSBURG VA (KFCX);

GREENVILLE-SPARTANBURG SC (KGSP); COLUMBIA SC (KCAE); WILMINGTON

NC (KLTX); AND MOREHEAD CITY NC (KMHX)...AND THE TERMINAL DOPPLER

WEATHER RADARS AT RALEIGH NC (TRDU) AND CHARLOTTE NC (TCLT).

DUAL POLARIZATION TECHNOLOGY WILL PROVIDE THE ABILITY TO DETECT

BOTH THE HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL PROPERTIES OF WEATHER TARGETS

SUCH AS RAIN...SNOW...AND HAIL...AND NON-WEATHER TARGETS SUCH AS

INSECTS AND GROUND CLUTTER. THIS NEW RADAR DATA WILL PROVIDE

ENHANCED INFORMATION REGARDING PRECIPITATION TYPE...SHAPE...

SIZE...INTENSITY..AND AMOUNTS. FORECASTERS WILL CONSEQUENTLY BE

ABLE TO MORE CONCLUSIVELY DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN HAIL AND RAIN IN

THUNDERSTORMS...AND PRECIPITATION TYPE DURING WINTER WEATHER

EVENTS...FOR EXAMPLE.
