Hurricane Sandy OBS (Part ii)

not even from our own country? this storm exposed a lot of things on a larger level. non-efficient disbursement of resources, confusion, ignored areas, etc. it also exposed an aging infrastructure.

But you need to remember that the size and scope of this disaster is just so huge. I know Excel Energy (utility from my area) send a bunch of crews to the mountains of West Virginia, NC where the snow has a bunch of folks without power. So from West VA to Maine, Ohio to the coast people had, and are having, power outages. Granted, it's really bad for you guys and gals on the coast but the scale is just immense.

We (US Utilities) send crews to Canada during events too (major ice storm a few years back) so their is reciprocity between us and Canadian utilities.

Just remember, the whole Country is behind you all in the recovery efforts and wishes for a quick return to normalcy.

Things went wrong after Katrina and things went wrong after Sandy.

One president got roasted for it while or current president and his bear-hug friend get off scot free.

More than a thousand people died in Katrina. Less than two hundred have died in Sandy. 'Nuff said.

I honestly think the power companies have done a VERY good job with this storm. The damage following Sandy was immense, and most people got power back in 3-4 days. I know I was out in Westchester from Monday to Friday; the Con-Ed workers were originally estimating 7-10 days with transformers blown, poles leaning sideways, and multiple wires on the ground. They got the project done in 4 days, and 1 day after the town cleared the trees blocking the roads and leaning on the power lines.

That's for Con-Ed. Much slower with JCP and L.

There are still 50-55K without power in Ocean County, 75-80K in Monmouth County, 25-30K Middlesex, almost 60K Morris, near 20K for Somerset and Hunterdon. It's now beyond 7 days for these folks. JCP and L's date for restoration of most customers was November 7th, about 7-10 days after the storm, and obviously coastal locations will be much longer.

So they still have about 300K customers in the dark. 7-10 days is a very long time for no power, especially for towns like Colts Neck where the power is necessary for drinking water / running water. Most of interior CNJ has well water. The Mayor of Colts Neck called the White House a couple days ago explaining his frustration with JCP and L, and that lives are at risk here given no water and no heat.

I for one am hoping there's a maor overhaul of the current power grid system in NJ.

BTW - some towns in NW NJ were told mid November at the earliest for restoration.

No not nuff said.

Katrina of course had higher wind speeds, a higher storm surge and a lower lying target. Of course more people died.

As I said...

Yes but Sandy hit a much more heavily populated one. HUGE difference between the Louisiana/Mississippi coast and the New York and New Jersey coast.

How well were people warned on LI about how long the power outages could last? I know I specifically warned everyone I'm FB friends with back in NJ etc that the outages could last 1-2 weeks. A few people took precautions, most of them didn't, and then were bitching the last week about not having power.

My mother-in-law lives downstairs from us. She's disabled, and is on oxygen. Before Sandy hit, she got a call from LIPA telling her that we may lose power for a couple of days, but she is on a priority restore list, meaning that they will make every effort to get our power restored as quickly as possible. They also gave her a number to call when the power went out.

Okay, fine... She got a weeks worth of portable oxygen tanks, and when the power went out, she tried calling the number she was given. Couldn't get through. Again, that's okay, they were likely flooded with calls.

She finally got through the next day, and their reply was "well, why didn't you evacuate and leave the area?" Again, we gave the benefit of the doubt, and figured they were overwhelmed and a little stressed.

Sunday, she was about to run out of oxygen, so she called again. By this time, parts of our neighborhood had been restored. So, she was no longer being nice. She again got the 'why didn't you evacuate' lecture, so she demanded to speak to a supervisor. This lady gets on the phone, and in the most sarcastically sweet voice, says "oh gee, it looks like 6200 on your area were restored, but we just didn't quite get to you... I'm sooo sorry."

That was Sunday. It's now Tuesday, and every block in our neighborhood has been restored, except for our side of the street, and the side behind us. Right across the street has been restored, and they had extensive wire damage.

What's the point of having a 'priority restore' list, when it has no bearing on the actual restoration time?

It's not just us. Our next door neighbor is also on the list, and is on hospice care. But, whatever.

If they had told us from the outset that no procedure is actually in place to restore power to those in need, we would have had her go stay elsewhere. But their communication has been so atrocious, and their attitude so arrogant, that it makes my head spin.

Cuomo ripping LIPA to shreds.

Now there is talk to have the military take over the operations.

LIPA is lost and has turned this into a cluster****.

Heads definitely need to roll... not just for me personally (btw Day 11 in the dark, and now I'm told maybe Sunday... axesmiley.png ), but people with critical health issues that are just getting lost in the shuffle and morass. It's like the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. What a joke.

Cuomo should be getting ripped to shreds for this gas situation. Things were supposed to have eased by now. And Bloomberg saying no to the national guard was not very bright.

Gasoline problems won't ease for a while.

A-) the stations are making a killing right now. They are charging $4.29-.$4.79 for a product that is supposed to be $3.59ish based on the current price of wholesale gasoline.

B-) people are still in a panic and everyone rushes to the gas station to fill up at half full.

Agree. It's unacceptable that one of the richest places in the world can't resolve this problem.

Guys... take the drive up here with some cans.. No lines and almost every single station has gas! 45 min drive from the BX to Orange Cty..

most of us dont live in the bronx and would require using a bridge to get there, and enduring long traffic. it's fine if you already have the gas, but those of us that are low might not have that kind of range. and it is also a law of diminishing returns, unless you have large gas cans to fill as well, since youll be using a chunk to get there and to get back.

in any event, we should never be forced to look far away for something so essential. something is very wrong here, and i tend to have creative conspiracy theories, but i can't even come up with one for this. i simply have no idea why this is happening still at this point.

Closer places in CT have gas with no lines. Some as close as 21 miles from the Whitestone Bridge. 25 minute drive from Queens.

My Lieutenant from work was up here 2 days ago with his camry and quite a few 5 gallon cans.. He lives in Wantagh. Sometimes you gotta make sacrifices regardless of how inconvenient it is. CT has gas as well..
