Hurricane Sandy OBS (Part ii)

They briefly got power back in Colts Neck from 5am-10am this morning then it went off again and still is. Very depressing. The schools in Monmouth are now going on 1.5 weeks closed.

Geez that sucks. Sorry to hear that. I would have your family call JCP&L back up to report they lost power again. Make sure they speak to a live rep too. Looks like most of Marlboro is back on finally, and schools are saying they are reopening on Wednesday. (at least for the middle schools anyway) Good Luck.

Thanks man. Yeah my family along with several neighbors called earlier today, didn't really find out anything. Still out now, but supposedly JCP and L is saying major restoration tonight for Monmouth with 100K+ more customers up. From their lips to God's ears. They've got to get power before this next storm.

Exactly. Let's hope so! Well I will say that those utility crews from San Antonio, Texas are still here in my town as one was parked in my cul de sac this afternoon taking their lunch break. (i believe they were from 'CP Energy or CPS Energy'? I forget exact name on utility trucks) Anyway, we should be thanking them for restoring our power, not JCP&L! ha ha ha

Just curious because I'd heard surge made it past Merrick Road in Massapequa. Anyone know how Nassau Shores made out. I used to live across the street from a canal and about a block from the bay.

Also, did water get past the LIRR tracks in Bay Shore?

TIA.

If you are on or near a canal on the south shore of Nassau its pretty much a guarantee you flooded. I watched 3 feet of surge wash over Merrick road in Wantagh into Mill Pond (a fresh water pond now destroyed) The surge was insane here it stopped right at my parents house in Wantagh a couple house from Merrick road. Anywhere there is a low spot the water went across Merrick Road. In fact it technically made it all the way to Sunrise Highway at Mill Pond.

The LIRR in the town of Babylon wouold function essentially a surge control barrier (for those that don't know, it is on a high concrete and earthen berm). If anything ever did make it that far, water would have to pass through a handful of underpasses. I don't think slosh even expects problems north of the tracks for a cat 5 hit.

Just got power back here in Central nassau, what a joke, Rockaways at zero because Bloomberg strongarmed LIPA into screwing Long Island, Nassau County got the shaft big time. I hope all of you out there get power soon, its way too cold

Governor Cuomo was just on t.v blasting utility companies for not restoring power fast enough.

How well were people warned on LI about how long the power outages could last? I know I specifically warned everyone I'm FB friends with back in NJ etc that the outages could last 1-2 weeks. A few people took precautions, most of them didn't, and then were bitching the last week about not having power.

I also warned all my friends on facebook about Sandy. A lot of them thought I was bull****ting. There are a lot of parts of the area which don't have power. Governor Cuomo also mentioned about Wednesday's storm. He said this storm coming up will be a serious one and as of right now, no evacuations need. He said that he will keep an eye on it. Cuomo > Bloomberg.

LIPA sent out a phone blast the Saturday before the storm saying the power could be out for 7-10 days. I don't know if that would count as a true warning lol.

Its bull**** that the mayor bitched and LIPA went to the Rockaways who got 100% power back leaving nassau county to rot, particularly northern nassau which has been totally neglected.

simply warning people doesn't make it any less unreasonable of a time frame. 1-2 weeks is unacceptable in this day and age, and just because you tell someone up front that they are going to get screwed, doesn't mean we have to be ok with it.

Well you have to consider just how much damage was done. When so many things need to be fixed, there's a limit to how fast it can get done.

sure, and i would never expect anything remotely instantaneous. But we had our power restored by Canadian power workers, while a few towns it was a nice group of Michigan power workers who restored the power. It shows us how unequipped we are for a true emergency, at least here on long island.

Well, I mean, what is the alternative? Power companies just can't keep thousands of people on the payrolls just to sit around and do nothing most of the time. Think of it as similar to everything else: when things get out of hand you call for reinforcements.

not even from our own country? this storm exposed a lot of things on a larger level. non-efficient disbursement of resources, confusion, ignored areas, etc. it also exposed an aging infrastructure.

Thank God, they just got power. Agreed, it's a good thing we've got out of staters helping us or we'd be looking at Christmas for a restoration time.

Oh good glad to hear that! Let's hope it stays on this time!! Yeah no doubt we would have been in the dark for a long time without the help from these folks from across the country. I can't thank them enough!

I honestly think the power companies have done a VERY good job with this storm. The damage following Sandy was immense, and most people got power back in 3-4 days. I know I was out in Westchester from Monday to Friday; the Con-Ed workers were originally estimating 7-10 days with transformers blown, poles leaning sideways, and multiple wires on the ground. They got the project done in 4 days, and 1 day after the town cleared the trees blocking the roads and leaning on the power lines.

I think they did all they could and aren't tracking outages anymore in those areas.

"PLEASE NOTE that impacted customers in the areas of the Rockaway Peninsula, Long Beach, Atlantic Beach, and Fire Island are no longer reflected on the outage map or in the total number of outages shown. Many homes and businesses in these areas are currently unable to accept electric service due to severe damage caused by the recent storm.

These communities remain a top restoration priority for LIPA and we continue to work aggressively to restore service safely and quickly. We are working closely with local authorities to identify homes and businesses that can safely accept power and to provide power to street and traffic lights."
