Isotherm
0.63" of rain so far here in Colts Neck. Highest wind gust of 35mph so far, but winds definitely beginning to pick up. It's been pretty light sustained thus far, generally under 15mph. Hopefully my anemometer holds up, it's on a 25' rod.
Sundog
The lack of rain for most of the tristate area will take away from the storms power perception wise for the average joe. People expect windswept heavy rain and they're just not going to see it. EDIT: The exception being of course the people that are right on the water and get flooding. NorEaster27
Rain wont be a big deal at all, its all about the coastal flooding. Not going to be as many trees down as Irene due to the leaves falling off now and the ground isnt saturated with 20 inches of rain.

I have experienced plenty of rain in my life time, intense winds not so much so I'll take the wind experience.
ace0927
rain is irrelevant to surge flooding. if you mean urban flooding, sure, but that was never the big issue here on the island at all. inland you may have a point, but inland areas should also see more rain than we do, especially south. so who knows. this is about the winds and surge for LI and has always been about those two things. yes, obviously for people near the water the rain will make no difference, but for areas 2-3 miles away from the ocean/bay all damage will come from wind. I wouldnt expect any flooding where I am in woodmere...which is a definite relief

Not going to matter for places where the surge rises and floods everything anyway.

Stormlover74
Yeah its interesting watching all the rain go due west rather than sweeping in from the ocean like we would normally see. If Sandy was taking a normal N/NE track all that rain to our south would have move through but with a track like this I'd imagine alot of places will barely get to the 1" mark. Rain wont be a big deal at all, its all about the coastal flooding. Not going to be as many trees down as Irene due to the leaves falling off now and the ground isnt saturated with 20 inches of rain. SnowGoose69
any ideas why the precip isnt symmetrical with such a string system...943MBs and the center will pass within 80 miles of the south shore of LI and we wont get more than a period of heavy rains...quite perplexing This is not unusual in landfalling hurricanes this far north, usually the east or in this case north side is more rain free...in Gloria there were periods of 90-100 mph winds over Suffolk county with the sun shining through clouds with isolated showers. TWCCraig
I have a bunch of tall Noway Spruces to the NE of my house and the winds are coming from the northeast. I hope to god they don't fall. In terms of rain, we are not going to get a lot but we will get some bands and squalls as the center gets close, that's where we could see the 80-90mph wind gusts here.
