ace0927
57kts JFK. thats insane.. Im 2 miles away, east...i havent experienced anything of the sort. There are loads of very old/tall trees around me and I was very worried about them..but they have barely had their leaves ruffled... but i guess, like in the winter, everyone always talks about prolific snowfall amounts and im always at half of the others... Rjay
Where on the sout shore? There have been multiple busts of 60 mph winds..now he hit the 70s. Its not constant. Its been coming in bursts that last a few mins.
Msalgado
How will the massive surge affect wind potential? I'd imagine a lot of energy is being dissipated in moving all of that water and that may lessen the wind threat to some extent? This seems backward to me. In order to move that much water you would have to have a huge and strong wind field. The wind begets the surge.

Kaner587
there was just a 57kt gust at JFK so these wind reports albeit on the high side seem pretty legit.

psv88
People generally overestimate wind speed. Sometimes I wish I could ban all wind estimates and only allow reports from legit weather stations. Montauk gusted to 71...people are accurate. ace0927
there was just a 57kt gust at JFK so its clearly legit. see my responses...im not saying its not right. im just surprised. and there is very little in the way of sustained winds...just stood outside for 3 minutes, one strong gust for 3 seconds. Sundog
What is with the live shots from the Battery? It looks like there's barely any wind at all there meanwhile the winds are howling here and everywhere else. We just lost a full sized healthy tree. Snapped from the base clean off. CharlestonNYC
Earlier landfall could be a savior though? I don't think so. That puts NYC harbor in the SE winds as high tide begins to build again.
swataz
I find it harder to believe that people have barely a leaf rustling when the wind in Hauppauge is snapping huge limbs every few minutes. let's not get too crazy with the minimizing. jm1220
Probably bad news for the surge. Longer duration of strong southerly winds building water up w/earlier landfall.
