Wx4cast
What's funnier, not have any tropical warnings from a 946 low with 500mb temps above 0C and a 11' storm surge? Or hurricane warnings to Hull from Earl? I guess the question is Why not hurricane warnings? BTW what was the CP at landfall, do you know?

Mr. Windcredible!
Just checking the boards after a couple day hiatus. Hope those of you most impacted are recovering ok. We're still without power here, though generator is humming away. The worst of Sandy didn't last too long here...there was a 15-20 minute period around 5pm Monday when winds went ape**** and we probably gusted to 70 mph a few times. Thats when we lost power. Got the kids away from windows and considered retreating to the basement...but things eased up. Looks like Madison CT, next town over, reported a 85 mph around that time. After that...we had our share of 50-60 mph winds...but nothing I hadn't seen before. Just branches down in our yard. Just around the corner a couple huge trees went down...one clipped the front of a home the other took out power lines and blocked the main road. Another neighbor lost a couple trees as well. Very thankful the trees behind our house held firm...as they would've easily hit the house. Got lucky on this one. Again...hoping for a quick recovery for those less fortunate! Amped
Videos on YouTube now of houses from our beach floating out into Long Island sound will post when I have the recourses. Just watched it I didn't see any pics like that from westport. Most of the damage was to the old beach brick building. Houses looked wet but fine. I haven't seen pics near the Bluff point area. It wouldn't take much to get those houses into the sound.
Sn0waddict
Still without power here. But I am thankful I still have my house, which can't be said for a decent amount of people south of route 1. Awful stuff down there. This is by far the worst storm I have ever seen here, and I can ony imagine how long it will take for the coastline to recover

Glad you made it through, same thing her with the wind it was tame all day Monday and then boom it turned on a dime and howled for 90 minutes or so. Good to know I was not the only person that saw it this way.

HM
There just is no way to illustrate to the public, even the people willing to listen and follow instructions, what it means when a tidal surge is coming with offshore swells exceeding 30 feet. The fact that NY Harbor recorded a wave that exceeded 30' and the speed at which the tidal surge hit cannot be fathomable to us. As Adam said somewhere else, we are going to have to deal with a lot of false alarms now and overreactions but I have no problem saying this for the next 1938, 1962 or 2012 setup: "The surge and waves will come in at high speeds and in seconds engulf your entire neighborhood, causing complete destruction. Please evacuate."
Sugarloaf1989
CL&P seems to be making good progress with the power outage situation and my town is at 9% out and this is down from 54% on tuesday morning. My sister in Milford, PA has been told to expect power back on no earlier than November 7th, yikes.

My sister in Milford, PA has been told to expect power back on no earlier than November 7th, yikes. The coast is seeing drastically slower progress as you would expect. Suspect big sections will have to be rebuilt. Still 60% here without power, and lots of side streets still have trees laying across them. I think East Lyme area is in pretty bad shape - seems to be a ton of outages over in that area with little change over the last couple of days. Port Chester's entire downtown area was dark when I went through there yesterday afternoon, so NY utilities aren't faring much better.

Yep, personal reports from a lighthouse keeper who stayed in Watch Hill RI lighthouse , man with 35years of sea experience said 40 foot rogue waves were sending spray 100 plus feet into the air. N. OF PIKE
i hope the suppliers have made taken to more aggessive measures looking to see which stations are clear (of water) enough to deliver to now, or alternate stations are being set up (by nat. gaurd?) because i believe patience is low, tempers are flaring, and the whole area from NYC (where 9 subway routes are closed) to NJ/LI/S CT/ where gastations are out of gas and are not getting refilled is (i'd wager to guess) getting out of control in alot of places (not everywhere) but i mean , generators running low, gas tanks running low, people want to make sure their families are safe, and decency manners and politeness go out the window in times like these all to often. You are right. In nassau county there is no gas anywhere, no power in most places, 77%, i repeat, 77% of a county of 2 million has no power! Not to mention that the water treatment plant serving 40% of the county has failed. http://www.longislandpress.com/2012/10/31/nassau-urged-to-conserve-water-after-bay-park-sewage-plant-failure/ Its a disaster here. Also, cell phone service is spotty at best. most calls arent going through in large portions of the island.
