CT Rain
Once again reminded of just how vulnerable NYC and New England is to hurricanes. We've been been lucky... but exceptionally at risk for a major hurricane.
CoastalWx
Ponder this, think of how extremely rare both 10/29/11 was and 10/29/12 was. To have such rare storms on the same day.

To be fair 10/29/11 was probably more rare. In reality, we were due for a major hurricane, Irene was just a tropical storm, so that doesnt count. 1938 had to come again
Mr Torchey
Has anyone heard or seen anything from Darien or the 5 mile river rd? I have family there and have not been able to reach them since yesterday. Noroton bay tokoneke ANC rowayton all flooded. Nobody has power lots of trees down but people were evacuated and are safe! Mr Torchey
First selectmen message ..... Beach is flooding again. 97% of town without power, stay of emergency no walking no driving. Waiting for surge to recede to evaluate the beach.

This was no 1938...though for NYC and a chunk of LI sound, the surge was definitely worse. The winds weren't comparable though. The number of power outages a '38 storm would cause is almost unimagineable.

New England had the snow last year, now the mid-Atlantic Appalachians... The photos coming out of West Virginia's upslope region by Beau Dodson are absolutely amazing. Beau's album... http://beaudodson.sm...59975&k=8bRjT6F He's posted a lot more in the mid-Atlantic forum's "snow chase" thread... awesome stuff. I'll take snow over wind/rain anyday. And the angle of approach into ACY from due east is very rare. Add that all up, and it's virtually mind-boggling.

CT Rain
The Sound avoided the worst. We lucked out in a sense because as catastrophic it was... it could have been worse. Much worse.

While the surge was comparable from Stamford to New York City with 1938 that's pretty much where the comparisons stop. Keep in mind all of those areas were on the left hand side of '38. dan11295
Of course the timing helped the sound but screwed NYC by having the peak surge line up with high tide. Guess its just a matter of luck.
amarshall
from a good friend of mine, this is not a joke We just left Rockaway. Absolute destruction. Everyone there is shell shocked. It looks like a tsunami hit. The boardwalk is completely gone. Our car is dead. Now the projects are looting and we left as they were having a shoot out with the police and national guard. Unreal. BrianLaverty
I'm going down to South County today to see the damage... anything that anyone specifically wants to see? I'll be going to Narragansett, Charlestown and Westerly.

powderfreak
from a good friend of mine, this is not a joke I was wondering about looting... within the zone of hard hit areas up and down the coast, there are some very poor areas (projects, essentially) next to some very wealthy areas. There's gotta be some clashing there.
powderfreak
Looks like we finally got the entire NOAA eastern regions web pages to fail... no local office pages are available. * * * * * * * Technical Note * * * * * * * Tue Oct 30 2012 12:30:41 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time) The web servers that normally support the eastern part of the United States have experienced a systems failure. To have such rare storms on the same day. extremely rare lol craziness at some point , as far as having 2 1 in 100 year storms in consecutive years though, one would start to (at least) ponder that we are either entering a pattern that is very conductive to such storms, (due to whatever you believe the larger reason to be ) or we just won the weather storm lottery. i lean toward the former. CoastalWx
Been without power for 24 hours and counting....fml People I know in that area said it wasn't bad, but others near Billerica reported trees down. I think some of that is related to those heavier showers going through. Nothing really to speak of at work.

Some of those BED obs were impressive when that heavier squall line went through yesterday early evening. There was one pronounced squall (maybe with the warm front?) that was right around the time of heavier wind reports from BOS to BED and then LWM. Crazy because it was almost like a bow echo moving from SE to NW... they usually move the other direction haha.

I think we would have been singing a bit of a different tune on the coast if Sandy came 6 hrs earlier or later.
