on_wx
The Queen Charlotte's were hit by a massive 8.0+ back in the 1940s I believe. Not sure what American TV is airing, but I'm about to turn on CBC or CTV and see what they are saying. Edit, both networks are airing recorded coverage. on_wx
I don't know how it works in the states, but the warning was issued 3 minutes after the quake and I assume that meant the EAS went off right away. But in Canada, it did not appear on Environment Canada's website until 35 minutes later.... and we don't have any mass notification warning systems. Hope these people are okay. Derecho!
This is a transform (strike-slip) fault, so the danger there actually is a significant tsunami is lower than if it was on a subduction fault - you can still have thrusting motions on a strike slip fault so a tsunami is possible, but probably not that large. It would appear first on this DART buoy: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=46410
